The new ones were very poor print quality (lots of overly light print and dark patches) and take a lot of cleanup and adjustment (I think I finally got the adjustment levels right with 'Sierra'). 'Trixie & Veronica' is next, then 'Stacy,' then 'Agent K' (probably packed with some non-toon UTOS shorts). Warning: 'Stacy' ends with needles and lots of Japanese dialog. (I might add alternate translated pages. 'Agent K,' suffers from Engrish.)

I believe this was his first cartoon-based copy book, so it is both very old and was probably only purchased by fans of the artist or the show (now that it is known that they sell, resellers stock up on his toon books, too). Not only that, normally only a few dozen of each copy book is made, especially for an old one like this that the artist probably thought would not be a hot seller. There were two other cartoon based books that came after this (a Ms Butterbean book and a Wuya book), and those haven't been scanned, either.

From others: WickedHearts' "Ore Dake no Kaoru-san" (PPGZ Buttercup goes on a date); Two of Wingbird's nasty-rape "Chara-Emu" copy-bon: 1 PPGZ, 1 Princess. ...I think I'm all set for a little while. After "Agent K" things should move a little quicker, the other books are better print quality and require far less clean-up. I, too, would love to see Mane do KP. Bah. I've just spent a hour and a half on the last page to clean up, and most of that was sweeping up around the dialog, AND IT'S STILL NOT FINISHED. Turns out the last interior page is very heavy on detail and text (both of which "attract dust"), and the printing was especially poor to boot. A LOT of clean up needed. (By contrast, I knocked off the back cover before work in about twenty minutes, even though I had to patch up some zip tone.) Good news is, most of the work's done. Bad news is my eyes are on fire and my mouse hand's all wobbly and I gotta go to bed before I fuck something up. Look for it Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Rather than relettering anything, I'll include a text file translating the pages with dialog. (This is in part because I don't know for sure how Stacy talks.) Hang tight, it's almost finished.

I'm still a clumsy noob at this, looking for the best level settings, file sizes, and so on. Back when "Trixie 2" was first posted, there was a big fight between those who wanted the huge, original file sizes, and those who wanted something a little more reasonable. The good news is, almost all (if not all) of "Trixie 2" (along with "Trixie 1" and "Trixie & Veronica 1") is included in the offset printing of "Ex: Trixie," which I'll slip in the schedule somewhere.
'Kay, I've started scanning some more books, and naturally one of 'em decided to be a fresh challenge, and that'd be "Ex: Trixie." As you can see from the raw scan at the top (1) of the sample image (scaled waaaaay down again), the image on the other side of the page bleeds through no matter what I do. Normally not a problem, right? Just twiddle with the bright/contrast until the bleedthrough fades. However, Made has added background tones that will fade out before the bleedthrough does (2). Yay! And I want to keep those background patterns. Developing solution: cut the foreground out, manually repair the background, re-insert the foreground (3), then process/touch-up as usual (4). This was just a rough test; don't worry, I'll do a better job for the final version. But it will be a little time-consuming and I'll work on other books in the meantime. (I really wish Mane would use a different printer. I had NONE of this trouble with the two Atomic Betty uploads.) If all else fails, I'll use GIMP's Ellipse Select and Free Select tools to make those backgrounds sharp but smooth...however, if anyone has a suggestion on a good way to reproduce those fade-out edges on the tone, please throw me a bone.

Workin' on 'em. "Trixie & Veronica 2" and "More Toon Girls" coming up next.
At the risk of starting another argument about cleaning up versus leaving the original "pure" or as-is, here's another scaled-down sample. (If this character looks odd, it's Veronica gone psycho, dressed as Trixie, complete with wig.) The first image is the raw scan. In the second, the levels have been adjusted, giving nice dark lines on white, but also bringing out all the specks, stray marks, flaws in the paper, and other crap. The third image is the finished version. I won't re-draw a line, but I WILL "whittle" it to a smoother shape--and that involves magnifying the image, setting the brush size, and pecking away at the line with my mouse, all the while changing the magnification to check my work. One page can take two to four $#%@ing hours. I love Shinda Mane's work, but damn, look at those eyes. I HAVE to tweak stuff like that. (In Mane's defense, doing toon characters is a whole different game from his usual work.) I've seen his non-weeaboo sets, and they're all seriously refinished, probably by a small helper-staff; I'm just doing the same thing, post-release. Hang tight, I'm getting there.

Update: I'm working on 'em, but the last half of Trixie/Veronica2 is turning out to be a lot of work; Mane didn't clean this one up too well. I'm averaging less than a quarter-page a day on my days OFF. (I haven't even touched the offset Trixie collection yet, or tackled Princess Wishes 1, and the new batch hasn't shipped from Japan yet.) The good news is, the Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi book is printed on excellent paper, cleaned up well, so I can tear through several pages while taking a break from TV2. The bad news is, it's 34 nonblank pages, so it'll still take a little bit; believe me, it's worth the wait. Starting tomorrow, I'm also going to start scanning the Wicked Heart PPGZ books (I have two of 'em now). They're even easier to clean up and post, shouldn't take long. And the Wingbird PPGZ doujins I've already posted? Wingbird's putting his Chara Emu series up at DLSite. Both of these were in the first collection (dammit).

Just a warning about the first Wicked Heart PPGZ doujin I'll be uploading (in a couple of days, fate willing): there's going to be an optional "altered" page included. The artist ("Zood") really goofed the proportions in one panel (in what is otherwise a smashing doujin) and it drove me so nucking futz I spent a couple of hours on GIMP tonight striving to "fix" it. Top panel original, bottom panel my fix. The original page will still be included, so purists can discard the altered version.
