Plain printer paper will work on a budget, but will result in flimsier models and generally be harder to work with.
It is reccomended to use cardstock instead. Cardstock comes in varrying "weights", meaning the thickness of the paper. The higher the weight, the thicker and more durable the paper is.
67lb Cardstock is good to start.
I've seen around 110lb suggested as well. You should be able to buy it at your local office supply store.
For the most part, it's a matter of preference. Start with the suggestions here, experiment, and find what works for you.
PVA glue. Or the stuff you used in kindergarden will work.
Don't use stick glue.
- Scissors
- Craft Knife/Razor
For cutting.
- Cutting Board/Mat
So you don't damage your table/etc when cutting with the craft knife. Some thick surface you don't care about scratching up will work fine if need be.
- Ruler/Straight Edge
- Inkless Ballpoint Pen/Leadless Mechanical Pencil/Paperclip
Run the pen/etc along the fold lines (scoring), for much easier folding.
- Dowels/Pens/Cans of varying sizes
For forming cylinders/cones.
