Oda added the supernova because he felt like it, it wasn't an editorial order or anything. Just from a writing point of view, having a small bunch of independent and diverse characters with diverse skills who can appear at any moment is very handy. So, he managed to set up his world so that a single area becomes a logical gathering place, introduces them to add a bit of flair to a necessary transition arc, and gives them just enough character, screentime, and billing that people don't easily forget them. Pretty slick.

Hahaha, even back in the day One Piece was ridiculous. I'm talking when One Piece fans would legitimately recommend Naruto and Bleach, and Paulie was going to be be the next crewmember instead of Kaku. It was always expected to surpass Dragon Ball. Sure, it didn't outsell the top 10 combined, but a smaller lead is still a lead.
