Before it happened, I could have entirely seen it playing out like that.

For the record, I still expect Smoker to become the Straw Hats' friend and/or ally at some point. Maybe not a crewmate, but I can see him being "nakama" in the same sense as Vivi or Bon Clay.

Nakama means friend/ally/comrade. I didn't mean he was a strawhat. But he was a temporary "party member" who, if they were to meet again, Luffy would go to bat for under normal circumstances.

> Luffy's gonna be part of the destruction that destroys Fishman Island. He's gonna trigger Shirahoshi's mad Sea King bringan skillz.

At least I got half of it right! Even if the first half was the complete opposite of what happened!

>Also, Luffy's gonna maybe try to pull a Whitebeard and claim protection, which will introduce us to Big Mam...

Looks like it's just a need for feasts with candy that'll introduce us to Big Mam.

Also, looks like Hodi's hatred wasn't destroyed at all. But it's fitting that he became an old man. After all, that is the old way of thinking, you know?

New speculation: Nami and Chopper are the keys to placating any ill will that Big Mam might have. The Nami thing is more of an informed inference, but Chopper is the cotton-candy lover after all!

In a way, Oda has left me stumped on this one.

Hody is one of (if not the only) character we've seen in One Piece from the ages of 5 to about 85. We were shown a lot of his background and origins, yet none of it inspired sympathy. He wasn't born a monster, he was made one; a product of his surroundings. True, he could have "turned the other cheek" about a lot of things, but he was only doing what everyone -- including his only hero/paternal figures -- taught him. This arc's theme is generations and the impact on children. These little fish kids in the plaza get their eyes and ears covered, but no one covered Hody's.

I'm not trying to inspire any sympathy for the character (I myself have little to none), but I'm disappointed Oda didn't do more with him. He had the possibilities of being one of One Piece's greatest villains, instead he ended up in a jail cell breaking his wrists for comic relief.
>> No. 22676
>>22675
I think the point is that Hody was never really a character to begin with, he adopted the ideals of others as his own and decided to polarize his entire life around them despite lacking personal experience to validate said beliefs and ideals.

As far was parallels to our society go, it was fairly well written.

Nakama means, in most One Piece contexts, "crewmember" or "one of us." Luffy never called Bon Clay his nakama. That's why everything they do for each other is so touching: They're just friends, but they go all out for each other as if they were nakama. As long as we're doing the SRPG analogy thing, Bon Clay is like a non-controllable NPC ally. Except that instead of being cannon fodder or a liability, he bails your ass out in a spectacular way that you wouldn't expect from an NPC. People that play Fire Emblem: the Radiant Dawn chapter 3-13 archer.

Oh shit I'm supposed to be speculating aren't I. I speculate that the FI arc won't be over before the year ends, which will make some people sad.

Oh hey, I hadn't noticed the new speculation thread. Here are a few general thoughts/predictions/speculation

-Big Mom is going to send an attack Fishman Island as retaliation for the bomb that was in the treasure.
-The Multiple Log poses is a neat idea, and I wonder if it's going to maybe open up a little bit of backtracking for the Strawhats. Maybe one log pose points to the side or even in the opposite direction.
-We're definitely seeing Shirahoshi and when we do Jimbei will be acting as her bodyguard. He won't become Luffy's nakama because he needs to protect Shirahoshi on whatever journey she's destined to make.
-Big Mom is going to be the Baroque Works of the New World; the first big hurdle for out heroes to face in a new sea. That means we could get a few more arcs in before we really get Luffy facing off with her. Little Garden and Drum Island happened in between the Strawhats taking Vivi with them, so maybe we'll get two or three smaller arcs in between now and then.
-Finally, I think it's entirely possible that once Luffy defeats Big Mom, he'll take her place as a Yokou. It'll give him equal ground with Blackbeard, who he's gunning to get revenge on. It'll also make him equals with Shanks, which will be appropriate for when they have their destined meeting.

As for predictions, Scratchman Apoo fucks up everybody's shit and finds One Piece, it's hard not to see it coming after we're introduced to him and his sick beats. My logic is flawless.

People being turned into robots scares me like nothing else. So I sort of want the Vegapunk Arc to take that and throw it into hyperdrive. Like, an entire city that's made of fake people that run on a one month long pattern of 'social activity' at the day, because that's all the time it takes before the whole crew is gathered up and pulped of humanity. Like, during the day's it a regular town, but at night the whole thing turns into a half-factory half-hunt down the organics program.

Really, just go fucking nightmare fuel with the whole idea, I want to be shitting bricks by the end of the Vegapunk Arc.

Based on what little we know so far, I'd guess Vegapunk really isn't a threatening individual at all. I imagine some old ditzy man who's most likely lonely and being backed up against a corner by the WG.

I was watching some pirate show the other day and when they got to the Anne Bonny section I just couldn't help but grin the whole time. We know Oda likes to base a lot of his characters on real life pirates whether it be in name (Whitebeard), or personalities (Blackbeard, Kuma). The more I heard about her life, the more it began to sound like some of the popular theories about Bonney flying around online.

Bonny was the rich daughter of a governor who basically got bored of her life and decided to run away to become a pirate in secrecy. For a lot of years she sailed around the Caribbean, becoming quite famous and successful until eventually her crew was captured. They were all jailed and killed except for her, who's ultimate whereabouts have never been known; there are no records of what happened to her after being captured by 18th century Akainu. The most popular and likely explanation to date is that her wealthy and influential father pulled some strings to smuggle her back to him against her will.

Some of you may have already known all this, but this is officially the theory I'm clinging to. That or she's one of Big Mom's daughters. I'm not ruling anything out. We just have to wait and see how it would affect the Strawhats.. if at all.
>> No. 23973

I thought Bonnie was one of the pirates who infamously "pled her belly" (a euphemism for revealing she was pregnant to escape the noose). Or was that the woman who posed as a man until she got caught?
>> No. 23975
>>23973
Close. You're getting her muddled up with Mary Read, the other famous female pirate she hung out with.

Anne Bonney hooked up with Calico Jack, joined him to pillage the high seas, got caught after a good run, successfully plead her pregnancy and got off scott free, as far as we know.
Mary Read dressed up as man, got abducted by pirates, decided it was a pretty good gig, joined Calico Jack, pillaged the high seas, got caught, successfully plead her pregnancy but died of a fever after her childbirth.

Also, there was an amusing mix-up where Anne was totally into Mary-dressed-as-a-dude before she revealed herself as a woman.

Vegapunk is Chopper FROM THE FUTURE
We don't see his face now because he's in monster form all the time, and that's why his hands look so wierd.
His crew died and so he built a time machine to go 500 years into the future, steal all these blueprints, and then head back, just to help Luffy... or kill him for something... whatever.
So then Chopper's all 'you can't be me you are human.' and Vegapunk-Chopper's all 'I had plastic surgery!' And so Chopper punches Vegapunk causing a time paradox and then Chopper is replaced by Jinbei.

What pattern?
She hasn't shown anything suggesting that she follows a pattern.
As much as I'd like to add another chick(ba dum pish) to the Straw Hat's ensemble, there's really no need for it and certainly no pattern to it.

Besides, as is now she kind of just seems like a random goon under some higher power, all of the other Strawhats have had fairly unique reveals displayed in front of Luffy, and I honestly don't think we'll see that at all here.

Also, just a minor and mostly coincidental thing I've noticed, all of the Strawhats have a singular letter to the beginning of each of their names. Like, there's no two people in the crew who have names that both start with "S" for example, they're all fairly unique from each other.

The idea that names being a pattern is sort of asinine, but it's just a neat little co-ink-y-dink that might be fun for some who like to make predictions and all.

The pattern I made in my head about the crew.

Short version: Four crewmates from every sea, East Blue, Grand Line, New World. There are patterns as to what type of individuals show up when and how that should reasonably carry over into this ocean too. Luffy said ten or so, that could also mean more than ten.

Order: Brawler fighter, with more broad aspirations that can't really pinned down as to when they're MET, (Zoro, Chopper) , girl that is part of the bad guys in one part, gets more useful after secondary arc about leaving and coming back (Nami, Robin), technological dude with an affinity for ships and upgrades whose specific goals involve finishing the journey,(Usopp, Franky) and pervert guy who plays a role on the ship Luffy wanted from the beginning. (Sanji, Brook)

There's also the element of the temp crewmate who joins before the first crewmate is established, and leaves before the second one joins. (Coby, Vivi). Caribou's the most likely to fill that role, but it could also be that one samurai they're carting pieces around with. If Caribou's got that back on the ship somehow, (and yes, we never saw it, fine, he isn't totally out of the picture until we've got a confirmation of still on Fishman Island.) then that's who the New World's temp crewmate is. I'm not saying I do or don't want Caribou to be that role, I'm just saying that he could be the one that fills it.

NOTE THAT I AM NOT PUSHING THIS AS SOMETHING THAT I WANT OR WHATEVER, I'M JUST SAYING THAT THIS MIGHT BE HOW IT'S GOING TO PLAY OUT. PATTERNS N' SHIT.

Kinda tough to say, since we haven't really seen many places where cars would be a thing someone would consider worth the investment. The biggest islands they've been on were Alabasta and Skypeia, and neither of those were environments well suited to car travel. Most of the other islands have basically been city-states, and not super large ones either, so travel by car wouldn't really be worth the effort of getting the cars or car parts shipped there.

But they've got trains and cyborgs and lasers. I'd say they could have cars if they wanted to, and might even have them on the Continent itself.

Roger's footsteps were one last great hurrah, with his death starting before the journey even began. Luffy may be following some of Roger's footsteps, but a) he's following Roger's rise to greatness, not the endtimes and b) he's also forging his own path. Settling down with a family or becoming an Authority Figure akin to Whitebeard (or more, if they really do end up toppling the World Government before this is over) is not at all something that would make him happy.

At the end of the series, he's really only got two options: go out free, protecting the people he loves, or giving up everything and Walking (or rather, Sailing) the Earth like Simon at the end of Gurren Lagann. And Walking the Earth / Sailing the Earth only works if his friends are with him--if the others all settle down and finish their stories, I'm pretty sure he's not going to be happy sailing the world alone.

That's the thing though--Luffy dying at the end of the series is potentially a Good End, as long as he goes out a free man, with a smile on his face, and especially if doing so saves everyone else. And I imagine if he does, he'll become an even bigger legend than Gold Roger in the process.

Yeah but who says that One Piece (the story) has to show all of Luffy's life? Or even most of his life? Or even spell out what happens to everyone! Hell, it could end with all of the strawhats except Nami done with whatever it is they need do to accomplish their current(<-important word here) dreams, then one of them goes "Ok so now what do we do" and Luffy goes "Whatever we want!" Then the last page is Nami's now complete world map with little textless snapshots of adventures the crew had on various islands all over the world. Happy and simple can be nice too.

I feel like the last chapter of One Piece should be a one-off story where Luffy hands off his hat to another kid before they sail off for their next big adventure. Alternatively, the Animal House ending, where they ruin the parade and then we find out what happens when they all grow up via captions over the ensuing chaos.

Also, every time he uses Gear Second his life lessens with each use, and Ivankov's treatments took away about a tenth of his all ready reduced life span. And as we all now, unlike villains (ex. Pain) the consequences of such strain always bite the heroes in the ass (pic related).

So hopefully Oda will find a way to address (and perhaps remedy) that, be it a macguffin or a cure ala Chopper. Otherwise, much like the former Pirate King, I can't see Luffy living very long after accomplishing his dream.

Keep in mind that it's been said in the SBS that the average lifespan in One Piece land in 140, with super-strong people like Dr. Kureha living even longer. Luffy could still live to be somewhat elderly by our standards.

I dunno. It'd be kinda a bittersweet epilogue to see all of the Strawhats around Luffy's grave. Especially if they play the thing totally cheerful and straight beforehand.

Like, we see an elder Ussop, Zorro, Sanji, Nami, Franky, Robin, Chopper (maybe Brook) etc at their homes as they wave goodbye to their friends and family, saying they're going off to see Luffy.

Then they all go to Raftel, meet each other, make some idle talk, maybe have old Sanji comment on how well Nami/Robin have kept their beauty. Then they all just walk out over to Luffy's grave and and give him a moment of silence.

... I think it'd be kind of neat to see.

Again IDK. I just think OP's greatest strength is that it can be happy and kind of sad at the same time. It's by no means a dark, depressing or grim story but it certainly has moments.

Really I guess for me? It's just the feeling that Luffy will have a happy ending if he becomes the Pirate King. As long as he does that? He could be dead the next day and you could never really say he didn't live a full or happy life.

Alternatively, we have another timeskip, where after two generations of abject felons, Garp finally gets the marine successor he's wanted for quite some time via Luffy's kid.

Said grandchild is seen on the smoldering remains of his ship alongside his/her own crew of winded, eccentric officers yelling at a departing pirate besssel that (s)he'll catch him someday. The ship it turns out, has a very familiar Jolly Roger, with Monkey D. Luffy himself perched on its stern giving a hearty wave as he tells his offspring that (s)he should eat more and that his/her mother is fine and isn't on deck to greet him herself because she has a small cold.

Well Margarita (Cindry's shadow) and her master are sort of implied in an extremely obtuse way. First, Cindry says that they were going to get together and she tested his love by breaking his plates, and he dumped her. Then, when she gets her shadow back she breaks a plate and apologizes because she knows that he hates it. Instead of getting angry he tells her he doesn't give a shit anymore and announces a have a party to celebrate her getting her shadow back.

Seems legit to me.

Vulcanization was proven right through the old "if it doesn't turn out the first time, keep trying for like 4 years" method.

I remember "Luffy will fail to save Ace" and "Whitebeard will die," but I can't recall people saying both at once.

Trafalgar Law is the shichibukai was pretty much a sweep, with only some Buggy supporters and non-serious random guesses in opposition.

Punk Hazard was an old Vegapunk base, and the site of Aokiji vs Akainu (though I don't think anyone guessed both at once).

Despite how sensible and deeeeeeeelicious a dark skinned Vivi would've been, Oda wanted to avoid the unfortunate implications of her being helped/rescued by a relatively white protagonist from the machinations of a pseudo-European (ie Italian mobster-esque) villain.

I'm sure that the only reason Vivi isn't brown is because everyone (but fishmen) is the exact same color in the manga when Oda colors them. Everyone. The same color. When writing, Oda not only doesn't give a shit about real life racial implications, he doesn't even give a shit about the existence of real life races in the first place.
