So I just watched all the Death Wish movies.

Charles Bronson > Errybody

These were for SURE the best revenge movies ever made.

I watched the last 40 minutes of the first one, where he starts shooting muggers. I found it pretty interesting how the movie focused more on people's reactions to a vigilante.

I've toyed with the idea of watching the rest of the movie/the other films, but I've heard there're some pretty graphic rape scenes so... yeah.

I think I know what you liked best, Tiki... it was the references to westerns, wasn't it?

>I've toyed with the idea of watching the rest of the movie/the other films, but I've heard there're some pretty graphic rape scenes so... yeah.

In the second movie they so graphically rape his Daughter to the point that her already rape destroyed mind can't process the situation and in one of the most soul rending, heart crush, tear welling, turn you into an emotional black hole of all time scenes, the 30 year old woman Childish cries and runs clear through a plate glass window to plunge to her death.

The performance of Bronson is incredible, he's so brokenly calm as he goes about murdering them, not over the top or ridiculous, just calculated murder to the point it becomes clear he's removing these people from the earth because he ideologically believes they cannot be allowed to exist.

It's incredible, the references are nice.

I'm hesitant to call them "revenge" movies because of how his initial motivation gets dropped after the first half of the first movie.

Yeah, but the route they took instead wasn't morally-defined, either.

Tricking the anti-hero at the last minute into his own demise doesn't discourage the hour and a half spree kill he just went on, it encourages not getting tricked after going on an hour and a half spree kill.

Quite, I found it a really entertaining movie after watching it cause Butler isn't playing a hero or a villain, he's playing a man driven to extremes and strives for justice.

Also the way he details his plans on the man in the video, ugh it makes me squirm just thinking about it.

Death wish and law abiding citizen always made me think about the people who would just starting killing each other in the streets over groceries and the MARTIAL FUCKING LAW that always is put into place. Like the directors think it’s almost a good thing to be done with how little noise they make in movies. And the "heroes" of law abiding citizen in particular are real fucking dicks with how that smug Jamie Foxx fucks this guy over a law deal and then has the goddamn self-absorption to feel justified into breaking into his base to bust him. He’s a fucking prosecutor; he isn’t even an active agent of the law. No he shouldn't be allowed to even think of using violence in a case.

I don't think you should have included Death Wish in this at all.

The thugs in the original Death Wish just saw a crime of opportunity, Kersey's wife and Daughter were wealthy, attractive and unlike what you indicated the murder of Paul Kersey's wife happens in her own apartment, the thugs even mention they weren't trying to kill Mrs. Kersey, they were just hitting her for the sake of feeling like they were powerful, that's why they were raping Paul's daughter in the first place and what the act of that rape was about. Same deal with 2 after Kersey humiliates a separate group of thugs who attack him, they kill and rape his maid and daughter as an act of power.

One of the most striking things about Death Wish is that he never finds them, the original thugs....They get away, the people who start him down this path he has no way of knowing or killing.

As for the "Heroes" as you say in Death Wish, they really are just that, In all Death Wish movies the various agencies realize their own legal impotency and allow Kersey to operate, in 3 under direct support from the Chief Of Police, who even helps him in the final shoot out.

For the most part Kersey's actions are either ignored or discretely endorsed by law enforcement and the people he saves are quick to come to his defense.

Kersey's growth as a Vigilante can be seen as having reached it's peak in the second movie where he no longer kills in the streets, preferring to tail his targets until they reach seclusion and he does not fuck around.

DeathWishyoutube thumb

Ochoa the detective from the first movie even meets his end helping Kersey fight off a mob of drug deal tell him to kill the last man responsible for his Daughter's Death "Get that son off a bitch, go! Oh..oh father lord god thou art in heaven....."

Martial Law only occurs in the third movie, but as a result of a violent street gang trying to take back their territory from the people who've started to strike out against them.

That's the theme of Death Wish, these people can only do this to us as long as we allow them to get away with it, that's why they told the story of the Hat Pin woman defending herself against robbers with a simple hair pin, or really any of the news reports in the series.

So yeah, I think you just meant Law Abiding Citizen.
>> No. 29235
>>29222
With that last part yes, Death wish was just me wondering about the martial law that would naturally happen if people started killing random thugs and they likely retaliated. They save it for the first movie but they don't exactly show how terrible it can really be and why the united states never really wants to show the public what that would be like.

That I only really began to hate characters in these sorts of movies until after the late 80s; Before then they were just dicks, after that they became something worse that didn't have the charm of people like Bronston put into his tough guy characters. I don't even know if I'm just being a snob or not at this point.

No, it’s a specific kind of America. The Ronald Regan Rightwing Hollywood of the 80s that had films like Cobra or Robocop that were filled with an open love of punishing the "horrible filth" of society, or if not their own people, then enacting a power fantasy involving the revived open hatred of communists and/or terrorists like in the remake of Invasion USA.

Senseless and flagrant killing which is morally correct when the hero does it because he is the good guy and this is how we should clean up crime/our country/the world of all of its evils.
>> No. 30579
>>30576
Again, though that's true of some of the movies, it's not for Death Wish which is actually a product of the 60's, filmed in the 70's and ending in the late 80's.

Also, I like that you mention Robocop, because it's the ANTITHESIS of what you are talking about, it's like saying Toxic Avenger is a Ronald Reagan era America film.

HAVE YOU NOT NOTICED THE POINT OF HALF OF THESE MOVIES IS THAT THE GOVERNMENT AND CORPORATIONS ARE THE REAL BAD GUYS WHO CREATE AND THEN SUPPORT THE "SCUM" THUS BEING WORSE?

THE HOLLYWOOD 80'S BAD GUY WAS ALWAYS THE GOVERNMENT OR CORPORATIONS, which is something it'd be nice if Hollywood would remember, especially since it's truer now then it was in the 80's.
>> No. 30587

Won't happen with the current Hollywood that sees government as the way to make Hollywood the mouthpiece of culture through censorship of all other voices.
>> No. 30594
>>30579
The senseless violent gangs were still a big part of robocop reguardless of it being pure cyberpunk at heart. If you looked at the movies I specifically showed you'd see that the only time government is mentioned in them, it is inefectual "liberal" government and in these the bad guys are terrorists, commies or just gangs. I never included Deathwish, I was specifically talking about a popular form of action movies in the 80s.

It wasn't all of Hollywood but it was being used as the same political mouthpiece it's been after J. Edgar Hoover. It’s the reason why you'd see Rambo 3 and strangely James Bond in the Afghan Soviet War. As much as there was CORPERATIONS ARE EVIL in some films there was also LIBERALS HAVE MADE US WEAK, LETS JUST SHOOT BAD PEOPLE in others and its hard to tell some times if a film made then was ever really on one side of this spectrum.

The movie that turned John Rambo from a tragic villain into a hero because people liked the Vietnam vet that killed cops angle. The other films are more of a revenge movie against communists but I guess the first one counts as one against his own country if you look at it hard enough.
