Of all his many failings as a writer, this is the one that pisses me off the most.

Anyways not a bad chapter except for that totally pointless and lazy three-page flashback montage. I can't confirm for all of it, but in the majority of those panels at least that's literally just re-used old art. That's some Toei Animation shit right there.

And it was really for nothing. It didn't give us new insight into the character or situation, or add anything to that old art. It was just kind of an unnecessary and flow-breaking refresher on the main character's basic character trait.

Let's travel back in time to chapter 426, when Kishimoto did something similar, but much better.

It's funny, actually, I was rereading some old Chuunin exam stuff a while back, and it occurred to me...I don't know if Kishimoto actually planned this or if it's just the happy confluence of two unrelated inconsistencies, but there's a case to be made that the Kyuubi has been tsundere for Naruto all along.

Remember when Jiraiya tossed Naruto off a cliff? It was the first time Naruto spoke directly to the Kyuubi. Naruto convinced the Ninetails to lend him some chakra on the basis that if Naruto died, the Kyuubi would go with him.

Hundreds of chapters later, it's an important plot point in the Minato is a Huge Douche flashback that if a tailed beast's container dies, the beast does not die with it; Instead it vanishes for a bit and then reappears somewhere in the wild. That was why Minato sealed the Kyuubi in Naruto to begin with.

So, basically, the Kyuubi was tsundere all along, and not actually in any danger of dying in that fall, but just used that as an excuse to give Naruto some chakra without looking like he was actually doing him a favor.

I suspect that it's an accidental saving throw on Kishimoto's part, as he never bothered to actually make this clear and instead just had it look inconsistent as hell, but hey. It's pretty reasonable.

Case in point, the Valley of the End fight. Right in the middle of an emotional fight between two former friends(?) and comrades, there is a flashback to the Uchiha family massacre. Not a flashback to when these two idiots first met, but it starts with a younger Sasuke and his daddy issues.

This could have been done in a filler chapter where Sasuke and Naruto are just talking, and the conversation gravitates to family and they both learn a little about the other in the process.

Maybe they just had a better budget back then, but they tend to go with these guys whenever they need huge, over-the-top fights with tons of shit flying everywhere, but this time around they really went nuts with it. Seriously, Porky Pig getting his head clapped between a pair of cymbals had the same fluidity as all this, it was just really out of place for Naruto (and it looked utterly hilarious, you can't tell me I was supposed to take "My pain is far greater than yours!" seriously when he's flailing like a water balloon in slow-motion.)

It's what led me to dub this group "Team Puddingface." I'm not sure, but I once heard Naruto has four animation teams that each specialize in different things to help pump out the episodes at the speed they do.
