Welp, it's time for me to step in, as fan of the original comic.
You see, the original italian comic series began to be published around 2001, and it was fairly good (even despite some executive meddling that tweaked the plot), at least until the issue #64, when the last of the original creators leaved the comic.
Anyways, around the 2005, an animated adaptation was released based VERY loosely on the first arc, and making it more magical mediavalesque that the comic originally was (mostly since they wanted to cash on the LotR hype, The Return of The King was released around that time). And as we know, it was awful.
Enter Greg Weisman, of Gargoyles fame, who developed the second season of the series. And while it still was loosely based on the second arc it was better in plot and writing, the main antagonist, Nerissa, was pretty much a female version of Xanatos, the girls and co. weren't always with the advantage, and even Nerissa's own minions are more effective than their comic counterparts(specially Shagon/Matt), among other things.
Overall, while not a masterpiece, it was a huge improvement from the first season, and it made the series more enjoyable.
And >>64765 mentioned, he probably did the bad move of missing the second season.
