I WROTED A STORY

its an epilouge for Shizune's bad end

It’s hard to believe it’s almost been 18 years been since I set foot in this sleepy little town.
I can’t say for sure what convinced me to make the detour to stop here, but it’s not far off my planned route. I briefly consider going to the school to see if any of my teachers still work there. I’m sure Mutuo would be pleased to hear from me if he’s still around, but I’m probably too late since it’s after school hours already. Instead, out of curiosity, I head to the Shanghai. To my amazement it’s somehow survived and is still open. As I enter, it’s clear that the place is completely deserted. As usual”
“”I can’t believe this place still turns a profit after all these years.” I quietly think aloud.
“Heh, on days like this neither can I” says a voice from inside the booth directly to my right. With a flick of her legs, the source of the voice rights herself. “What can I get you?” she asks as she straightens her uniform, but I’m instantly distracted by the teenager’s shoulder length, bright pink hair.
I manage to order a coffee after my brain catches up with me.
“Sure. Just take a seat, any seat and I’ll be right back.” She says with a smile.

I take a seat in a booth and she returns a minute later with a pair of drinks.
“Mind if I join you? It’s either this or I go back to taking a nap”
“No that’s fine” I say as I go to take a sip of my coffee. Not particularly bad but still not particularly good. Just like old times. I can’t help but look at her bizarrely coloured hair.
”so you’re from around here?”
“Yeah. Not for a really long time though. I went to high school here”
“Mmmhmm. And let me guess, my hair reminds you of someone from back then?”
“Yea- what? How did you know that?”
“Pfffthahaha, you have no idea how often I get that from people around here” She laughs. Something about the laugh sends a shiver down my spine. I think a part of me knows what is coming”
“My name’s Shizune Mikado. I’m going to assume you knew my mother”

Eventually I manage to pick my jaw up and start forming coherent words again
“y-you... you’re Misha’s daughter?” she just giggles at my shock and nods
”well in that case, I’m Hisao Nakai”
To my amusement she almost perfectly mirrors my own shock
“WAIT, WAIT. You’re /the/ Hisao?”
“...I think so?” I guess I must be.
“God, whenever mom talks about her time at school she never shuts up about you and Shizune. The other Shizune of course”
“Yeah I kinda figured that” I smile at the idea that Misha still thinks of those times fondly. Sometimes I find it hard to do. The decision to go our separate ways put a real dampener on the good times we had together.
“Hoooooly shit! Mom is going to flip her lid when she hears about this.” Shizune seems to be as excited as I am shocked at this chance meeting
“So what is Misha doing with herself these days?”

“She teaches sign language at the Academy”
“Huh... well I’m glad some of us have managed to chase our dreams” I can’t help but notice a slight bitterness in my own words. I’m happy with the way my life turned out, aren’t I? I shake the thoughts out of my head
“It is, isn’t it?” She smiles”I go there too, y’know.”
“Oh? The perks of having a parent teaching there I guess?” she goes quiet and I realise I’ve touched on something I probably shouldn’t have
“Yeeeeahh not exactly.” She nervously fiddles with her hair. “I was there before she started teaching. I’ve always known I’d end up there because of my... condition...”
I can’t resist studying her to try and work out what she’s hiding. She instantly sees this and starts laughing
“It’s not the kind that you can see, so don’t bother “she says and waves off my morbid curiosity. She makes a blatant attempt to change the topic “Now, tell me more about what you and Mom got up to at school. I don’t get to talk to many of her old friends”
I drain the last of my coffee.
“How about some cake first?”
http://youtu.be/8rKTgtvH8u

The conversation draws on for nearly an hour. By now she opens up to me like a long lost uncle.
For every story I have from school, she has one from Misha’s time as a mostly single parent
“Are you doing anything for dinner, Mr Nakai? I’m sure mom would love to see you”
“Hisao, please. Don’t make me feel older than I already do. And I’d be delighted.”
A troubling thought occurs to me
“Your father won’t mind you bringing home a strange man from your mother’s past for dinner
She gives me a strange look, but I can’t work out what I said that could have triggered it
“It’s not going to be an issue. I thought you of all people would have known? I guess she wasn’t always as open about it...”
“About what?”
“About uh...” she fidgets awkwardly “look, you’re not really her type. And mom’s... mom’s girlfriend would probably understand that”
The conversation on the rooftop suddenly comes flooding back to me
“Oh... OH. Yeah of course. God it has been a long time hasn’t it.”

She suddenly goes very quiet. She goes to say something but she hesitates.
“I’ve never met my biological father. You probably have. One of the few things mom will tell me about him is that they went to school together”
My mind races as I try to work it out. She did seem to get on well with Takashi. I’m sure there were other boys outside our class that she was friends with.
“Do you know anything else about him?” I ask, trying to narrow it down. She nods silently
“Heh, I don’t even know if he knows I exist. But Mom tells me that my condition is inherited from him.” After the cheerfulness of the conversation, her voice has taken a rather sombre tone
“But that’s not such a bad thing” she says, visibly perking up “because they knew it was a possibility that I would have it as well, I was checked as soon as I possible could be. We’ve been able to manage my condition ever since, otherwise I could have ended up having a heart attack at 16 like he did”

The major conflict in Lilly's route isn't even brought up til halfway through Act 4. It's hinted at heavily but never changes the course of their interactions, so it's very pleasant. To me, though, this makes the ending even more pleasant. Uncomfortably pleasant.

Rin's route is NOTHING but conflict. Remember dinner at Emi's house? Multiply that with Misha's comfort, then add a language barrier. Hisao in Rins story is also really well-written. His narration is always novel and honest. He's a completely different person in Rin's story.

So Hanako is the last story I haven't completed. It's interesting so far, but suddenly the dialogue got really awkward? I'm at the part where Lilly and Hisao head into town to buy Hanako a birthday gift and it really seems like whoever wrote this part was just talking to themselves. It's in perfect grammatical structure with perfectly standardized vocabulary. All the characters suddenly sound the same. It's weird. I hope it doesn't persist through the rest of the story.

I don't think it does, but it's been a few weeks, so I don't completely remember.
I do remember being shocked at how well-written it was when I was finished, though. Like DudeWithMoney said, it was an incredibly accurate representation of the whole "girl with severe social anxiety and well-meaning but incapable dumbass guy" thing.
But yeah I think it gets better, maybe.

Yeah, you could easily make the girls non-disabled and the routes would play pretty much the same.

People get social anxiety over far less then burn scars, so Hanako route would be the same. Shizune could be changed to being from another country like China to keep the language barrier, and Rin, Lilly, and Emi's conflicts don't have anything to do with their missing limbs or useless eyeballs.

Now that ya'll got your toes wet, I figure I might try and get ya to play some other visual novels. Happily enough, the demo for Kinoko Nasu's (the Type Moon guy) newest game, Witch on the Holy Night, was translated recently.

http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=282059

I STRONGLY encourage anyone who liked KS and might be interested in seeing some other VNs to check out his work, it's all really good entry level stuff and Fate Stay Night remains my favorite visual novel as well as one of my favorite games in general.

Tsukihime is aged and it shows it but it's still decent enough. There's a remake in the pipeline but Type Moon operates on the same timetable as Valve (WotHN was supposed to come out in 2008 originally).

Yeah, FSN's nice because it's got a pretty strong amount of action going on in it, which is unusual for most VN's I've played. I've only played the Fate route, which was all right, but I'm told IBW and HF are way better.

EMIYA. SHIROU!
KOTOMINE. KIREI!

Oh and quick correction. I keep calling it "Witch on the Holy Night" but that's actually the name of Nasu's old novel that its based on, for the game it's only the subtitle. The proper title is "Mahōtsukai no Yoru" or "A Magician's Night."

Not that it matters since everyone just calls it Mahoyo most of the time.

I'll get back to you once I've played some routes. I'm still adjusting to the idea that this is going to be something I'm doing. I played blind (no decision guide) and Hisao wound up falling for Emi. It ended in WARM FUZZY FEELINGS.

Afterward I had to write something, ride my motorcycle, chain smoke and then write something about riding my motorcycle and smoking. I haven't written anything in at least seven years. I have STRANGE FEELS and I am not good at having FEELS. When shit was looking bleak in the middle of the story I wanted to break into the game and give Hisao some advice about things. This VN has done something to my head.

Fate Stay Night actually fits that bill pretty nicely, though you'll need to get the Realta Nua patch that adds Last Episode in.

Yes, in fact you have to install the English patch for the RN patch to work I think.

I wouldn't call them VNs really, they're pretty much straight up strategy games. But they have WAAAY more porn than your average VN so they get filed in with them anyway.

Gotta use a timer/watch to do it right. I actually restarted after the first week because I thought keeping time in my head was a totally good idea.

Someone on /v/ made music compilations that tell you when to switch from running to walking and back. I haven't got the links saved, but I'll post them here if I see them pop up in a KS general thread.

>is a simple mile-long walk every morning (more or less; any way to measure THAT?).
One way is to extrapolate from your time. A typical walking pace is around 15-20 minutes per mile, depending on how briskly you walk. The point where a slow jog and a really brisk walk are the same speed is right around 14-15 minutes per mile.

If you want a low-tech way to find your pace, find a known distance (like the length of a building or a school bus) and time how long it takes you to traverse it. You can extrapolate out from that to your mile pace (but don't calculate more than two significant digits, it's an inexact method). As long as you run about that pace, you can know about how far you've run. It's not all that accurate (I'd give it a plus or minus of 0.2 miles), but it's easy.

Also, you could try something like mapmyrun.com and plot out the normal route you take. It will tell you how far you're walking in a given amount of time, which will give you a nicely accurate average pace.

>try to end up on Lilly's route
>realize I'm about to end up on Rin's instead
>shit
>be a jerk to Rin in an effort to salvage this
>end up with Kenji for the festival
HOW DID I GO SO WRONG

You made a choice some time ago that set you down a different path than Lilly. Start over and think about what's important to her, what characters she interacts with, what she spends most of her time doing, etc.

Yeah, I figured out that blocking out Hanako's path kinda removes any time I'd be spending with Lily, as well.

Now that I'm back on track, oh my gosh this route is so cute I am just sitting here beaming like a dork

have a silly picture before I get too caught up in the feels to want to dig through my folders

Ha! Joke's on you! I went back to the gym a week before starting KS!
spoiler]I felt the end Hanako's route [/spoiler]was a bit rushed. Am I wrong for wanting a bit more smooching, maybe some holding hands? I know it was implied. Maybe someone has some nice fanart of Hisao and Hanako holding hands and walking off into the sunset?

I have entire novels of fanfic in my head. The most cutesy-pooh, lovey-dovey fanfic you ever did see. I need to go smoke a cigarette, ride my motorbike, drink a fifth of scotch and get into a fist fight now. Urgently.

>Hanako's route ending felt a bit rushed

I'm inclined to agree. A lot happened during her story, but the most of it seemed to stack at the beginning. I'm still impressed by the muffins in the window.

Don't fight the feels, bro.

Write it. Write it and then ensure I read it.

They could have at least drawn a happy face for Hisao to transition to after looking surprised.

When my brain gets working again I'll get on that. (Currently too much work/cold medicine to have FEELS.)
