Sort of, I didn't get a good look at the big thing but I expected RE's style at this point to involve lithe, insect/plant like zombies instead of this huge fat ball of puss. Even the giants in 4 were a slightly realisitic mountain of muscle mass then anything else.

This however doesn't really fit with the usual monsters we've seen in these games to me.

See, now I liked that twist on the story. It's something that I could see happening in a non-apocalypse zombie outbreak.

I don't care about valve being uncreative with something as beaten to death as zombies; I was just hoping there was some slightly unique take from the franchise that gave us everything from zombie animals to mutant worms. Giant fat guy in 6 is disappointing to say the least. I’ll take it back if they do something to spice him up like if he dies he reanimates corpses or you get stuck to his body oil and he swallows you in like clay face but visually its boring.

I do like the "fuck your cover" tenticle arm dude. I like morw dynamic enimes like that to show up.

Survival horror? Where? I saw sliding under zombies and karate kicks and taking cover from enemy fire. Game looks fast paced as hell
>> No. 144958
Personally I don't mind RE going all-out action. Mostly cause GOOD horror (at least to me) is about mystery and oppression.

Silent Hill gets that right. Silent Hill is about a mysterious city where the psychological manifestations of a person's inner turmoil try to kill him. Silent Hill games revolve around a mystery, they revolve around somebody (or some people) having big skeletons in their closet and those skeletons coming in to kill them.

Resident Evil? Never really had that... at least not for long anyway. We know that Umbrella are corrupt and stupid and are constantly the cause of zombie outbreaks via a virus. We know that there's generally an enemy at the end of all this that we need to kill. There's really no "horror" in it at all outside of the threat of impending death, and once you nut up and accept that then it basically IS an action experience more than any real horror experience.

Resident Evil's always erred on the side of campy and balls-to-the-wall crazy rather than actually drawing you into an atmosphere and letting the horror of reality sink in on you.

>> No. 144964
>>144958
I like to think of it more in the sense that RE's premise is survival more then horror. Even if that means you are killing the source of this terrible disease and slaughtering the undead that others couldn't stop all by yourself sustain your endless fury with bizarre herbal knowledge and a handful of bullets. It's both campy and feeding the lizard brain side of you that only thinks in GET KEY, EAT PLANTS, KILL SHIT.

Yes, but a lot of that feeling of powerlessness comes from having a character that controls like a particularly slow forklift.

In my opinion, Resident Evil 4 was hands down the best RE game.
People will bitch about how it "killed" Resident Evil by doing things differently and bluh bluh bluh, but quite frankly, the earlier RE games were pretty awful in most regards. It had it's problems, but they were much fewer than the previous titles.

Resident Evil 5 was ok, but they actually did take the ACTION FUCK YEAH element waaaaaaay too far with that one, both gameplay wise and story wise.

But, from the looks of it RE6 is going to attempt to combine the elements of these games to make something all audiences will enjoy. From the trailer the Leon segments look like they're going old school RE survival horror with the small town location/traditional zombies and a generally eerie vibe. Whereas the Chris storyline will likely be all testosterone, cover shooting and boulder punching with head bursting zombie monsters.
And I imagine the Ashley/Bald guy storyline will be for whoever the fuck actually liked the forced co-op aspect of RE5

All I can say is that the prospect of playing as Leon again and even slightly more survival horror based gameplay, not to mention the inevitable Chris/Leon buddy cop team up is enough for me at this point.

This is actually hilarious and awesome.
Me and my room mate, after playing RE5 were basically like "So how much you wanna bet that the next game is going to take place in japan or something? I mean, they've killed off all the Spanish and Africans, all that's left is the Asians." And we were also going on about how Sheva is a pretty lame sidekick and Chris is too much of a douchey cheeseball to be the protagonist. So we decide that the next game would need to star Leon and Chris because they'd have a great character dynamic.

But anywho, I'm actually pretty stoked for this. The new gameplay elements look pretty cool, and Leon is back, and looks kind of like Kurt Russel.
The fact that Ashley is back and in an action role is fucking hilarious, now all we need is the return of the merchant and the inventory management.
>> No. 144981
>>144974
Believe it or not, that was actually done on purpose to keep players on edge whenever something sudden happened. Lots of horror games limit movement or capability to drive home the fact that you have less control over your situation in the game than you have in your own life.

It's one of those MvC2 paradoxes, where bad design makes games better.

>>144975
>In my opinion, Resident Evil 4 was hands down the best RE game.
Woah, slow down there, Tex. First, let's get something straight. There's this thing that's been happening for the past 7 or so years where game companies make "sequels in name only" to give unique new ideas legs without the risk of making a new IP, which ends up splintering their fanbases in the process. It's the same thing that happened to Final Fantasy, Fallout, Banjo-Kazooie, Warcraft, Marvel vs. Capcom, Deus Ex, Street Fighter, X-COM, Civilization, and oh-so-many other series. In most cases, these games really are good. But rather than call them better, I prefer to call them "different". Sure, I loved Fallout 3, but comparing it to any other Fallout game is like comparing apples to durians. And that's exactly why fans get mad over games like RE4. I mean, you spend a huge chunk of the decade playing "Red 2", getting attached to the game, learning of its intricacies and flaws, and then, after years of begging and praying for a sequel to "Red", with more shades and even more vibrant colors, "Red 3" comes out, and the game is fucking "Purple". Blech. Purple may be good and entertaining, but it isn't Red.

As an added twist, I too prefer RE4, even though I'll admit it isn't as scary as RE 1-3 and Outbreak.

>And I imagine the Ashley/Bald guy storyline will be for whoever the fuck actually liked the forced co-op aspect of RE5

It looks to me more like an RE2's Claire Redfield Substitute (Ashley?) + RE3's invincible Miniboss + RE4's Useless sidekick.

Also, all three sections seem to have co-op, according to the trailer. Leon is with Agent Scully and Chris is with the Scout from TF2.

How? It literally was a rehash of 4 in so many ways. From the QTEs, to the poor rural setting with minorities, to some of the animations, to buying weapons instead of just finding them, etc.

Story wise it made a 100X more sense than 4 which had ONE DUDE trying to save the PRESIDENT'S daughter from a TERRORIST CULT with prehistoric parasites in their heads. Also Napoleon

The proliferation of BOWs and Viruses was an actual logical place to move the story considering the shut down of Umbrella (Something only really addressed in those Wii lightgun games)
>> No. 145017
>>145014
The problem their being that it was largely a rehash of 4. Both were ACTION MOVIE AS FUCK, but 4 did a much better job if maintaining a more disturbing atmosphere. You're one man, in a foreign land, hounded by a terrorist cult weilding a monstrous prehistoric parasite, led by three eccentric sociopaths who want you dead. 5 did a lot of similar things but also had PRESS X TO PUNCH A FUCKING BOULDER and put a greater emphasis on the action. 4 was a B horror movie, 5 was full on action horror ala-Devil May Cry.

...I...

...don't you people NOT play the light gun games or other capcom-made survival horror games??

The over-the-shoulder style viewpoint came from RE:Dead Aim. While Aiming, though is when it stunk to hell since it's like playing a light gun shooter...without the light gun. Trust me, aiming was slow there. And the aiming reticle was cheesy as fuck.

The run and gun pace of fighting and the point system came from Dino Crisis 2. Also, there was the proto-type of the services the merchant offered came from later...though in the form of a console, which was not as interesting as hearing "What are you buying?" from the merchant...

So yeah, I'm mystified why they think Capcom stole concepts from other companies' games when they were already developing them themselves.

Although I must admit, it sure as hell looks like they did anyhow....

That looked pretty fucking cool, and I am down with 2-8 player online co-op. I really hope it gets a PC version.

Also, ya'll need to get over the boulder punching. It was really nowhere near as ridiculous as you people keep saying it is. I know I was really disappointed when it came around, and you all built it up to be this huge, over-the fucking top, balls-fucking-crazy thing. I remember playing through with Toxie, and not knowing when it would happen, but would get excited every time it looked like it might happen. Like an awful, never-ending, cock-tease. I was expecting for Chris to get infected with the same thing Wesker and Jill were on, to allow him to do such an amazing feat. And then it happens.

He was just trying to push the boulder. The punching was more him being desperate and frustrated than anything. It wasn't that over-the-top.

Anyhow, I liked RE5 better than 4 for the simple fact that I liked Christ better, and the controls were actually playable. I don't care if the controls were bad "on purpose" in RE4, bad controls are still bad controls.

But anyway, I am down with RE6.

Seriously, look at the last two strikes that actually knock the boulder in. Chris DOES punch the boulder several feet before the final push.

He shoved it until it already began rolling downhill, regardless of him punching it those two extra times the result would have been the same.

I'd totally buy Dead rising DLC that let you play the games as characters from Resident evil...or a game that just had all the characters from Capcom's zombie games put together in one thing, where you run about killing zombies and all sorts of B.O.W's.

I mean its not like people play it for the plot even if they like the characters, because Capcom are bad at writing plots.
Haha how many outbreaks are they going to have in canon with the neverending sequals before it becomes a zombie-apocalypse.

4 was terrifying for like a grand total of 10 minutes. Once you got past the initial shock of the chainsaw guy and the bad guys swarming you, it became very routine due to how weak the regular enemies were. 5
failed in the part that it was supposed to make the Majini more of a threat, they were depicted as more intelligent with the using of firearms and riding on motorcycles and whatnot but they still were just ho hum baddies. Granted 5 was harder than 4 due to less inventory space but it was still pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel.

>>145137
Yeah it was stupid but not as dumb as literally just punching that shit like Fist of the North Star. He, after much pushing (Because in game, it never worked that fast), yeah, a punch does help loosen it, but he was putting his whole body into that mother fucking boulder. It was no where NEAR as over-the-top as you people on /cog/ kept saying how ridiculous it was. And it wasn't nearly half as ridiculous as most of the things happening in the game, or even that fight. I don't know if you in particular, Morbi, were pointing out how boulder punching somehow made this game worse (which still makes no sense to me at all) than RE4, but all I know if that I was fucking prepared for bad ass boulder punching and breaking action and was fucking denied. Like a stripper that keeps brushing her crotch against yours, telling you anything goes in the VIP room, so long as the money's right, and then going "lol nope" when you proposition her there, and she gets you kicked out of the club and almost arrested. You people promised me so much in this game, and I was delivered so little in the way of over-the-fucking-goddamn-circus-orgy-top BOULDER PUNCHING.

Also, all you people that love RE4 so much, get over yourselves, please. You are more than welcome to like it better over RE5, that's not an issue. I don't get it, but it's fair. Just don't exaggerate the awesome sweet nectar ambrosia that is boulder punching like that, because you got me so excited, and then the game never delivered in a say you said it did. I mean, it was still better than RE4, in my humble opinion. I personally preferred the controls and I like Chris more than Leon, but that's just me.

That said, i never really thought about the boulder punching in relation to the rest of the environment, and it just makes the whole thing a little more badass. I don't know how better to end that game than to duke it out in the middle of an active volcano, except maybe in space. Like on the moon or something.

By the way that GIF? That's what made me want to play RE5 in the first place, and I will now personally blame you every time I talk about how let down I was by the boulder punching not being bigger.

The problem with the Boulder Punching is that it's a flag. The best example of whats wrong with the game in an easy two word phrase.

Dependence on QTEs, WESKER SMOKE TELEPORTING, magic gem computers that can actually control your mind, punches doing more damage than handgun rounds, and all other giant stretches of ridiculous crap. These things made fans grown because they meant that the game developers didn't quite understand the series and were instead ramping up vapid stimulus instead of actual depth. Wesker has superhuman abilities? Make him neo and invincible. Lots of guns in RE games? Let's pack it with so many machine guns and explosives that it could be WW3. RE5 felt like a teenager decided what could be improved from RE4: Exact same game, only now everything is bigger and covered in spikes.

And that's why boulder punching is a summarized drag on the game. It's just the last straw of poorly thought out ideas players had to deal with.

Revelations looks like it might be okay, but I still don't have a 3DS because it costs money and the last time I checked (admittedly, that was several months ago) it didn't have much of a library, so I probably won't be playing it for a while. I watched some trailers for Operation Raccoon City, and it looks like it might be fun and cool and everyone will have a good time.

I literally know nothing about RE: ORC though, so is there going to be a versus mode between America As Fuck Law Enforcement guys and the Shadow Science McEvil crew? Like, you guys fight, while also killing zombies?

As hot as this, this is just stupid design. RE may not have a riveting plot or deep character arcs but one thing they do get right is character design being somewhat realistic and not too fanservicey sans Jill and maybe some of Ada's looks. Cause they dropped the ball. Despite what people say about daylight and whatnot, the setting could've provided for some good horror. Running through the bush while crazed africans chase you is not exactly picnic fun time. I also wish they used the Hook Man from the cancelled version of RE4. It would've made sense with the use of the tentacles everywhere virus aka Progenitor virus as well as the makeshift weapons theme started with 4. Plus it would've been creepy as fuck since they could pull a Nemesis and make him come up at random or semi random

Infected elephants and rhinos and whatnot were in outbreak too no? They would've made better bosses than EL Gigante 2.0 who didn't even make sense in RE4 anyway

There could be plenty of room to elabroate on a romantic relationship if need be post 5. It's clear Chris and Jill aren't meant to be lovers since they've been working together for so long canon wise and nothing has come of it. Maybe they tried it didn't work or just didn't have that type of relationship. Either way, Jill x Josh wouldn't be so random and would be a small thing anyway. This is Resident Evil after all

Yeah, I think Barry Burton is the best way to handle romance in the RE series. Keep it off camera and never involve them.

Think about Arkham City. Were the romantic interests handled well in that game? Did it really add anything to the gameplay, characters, or story?

Basically every plotline featuring them in recent games, 5, revelations, has been about one searching for the other, and at times how no one can come between them, ie: Jess. If Jill did apparently get together with Josh it seems like would only be for badly written DRAMA between these three characters so no, I don't want a shitty romance drama with Chris acting surly about not having his partner anymore and maybe butting heads with Josh (Before his rumoured death as befits anyone who pilots a helicopter) in my zombie-killing action.

Yes. RE4 was suppose to be about ghosts and demons and shit, but Kamiya didn't feel that was being "true" to the franchise so he made it a Castlevania type game.

Dante in DMC1 was suppose to be Leon (and bits of his personality come over) and Trish was suppose to be Ada Wong.

Resident Evil 4 Beta Versionyoutube thumb

I admit I was going off this, which is the Beta of RE4 before it became DMC.

The guy in the vid looked A LOT like Leon from RE4, what with the coat/haircut. Although that does just bring up even more interesting perspectives on how things evolve.

Since this would basically mean "Tony" evolved into Dante and then got most of his design elements transferred over to Leon from RE4. Either way, there is a connection...

Although I dunno where I got Trish=/=Wong from honestly. Probably something I heard a while ago that just made sense all things considered.

RE's cast pales in comparison to DMC's by a mile. Despite the latter series being more crazy kungfu oriented, its handling of its universe and plot is done way better than the RE series.

And Dante's personality was based off of Cobra from the manga.

>Despite the latter series being more crazy kungfu oriented, its handling of its universe and plot is done way better than the RE series.

I personally put that more into how good the writers of DMC3 were, surprisingly.

DMC1's plot was pretty slipshod and not well-built at all. DMC3's managed to not only be a good lead into DMC1's but it also helped establish and put greater context into things that you would imagine being a lot more important than they actually were in DMC1's.

Sparda's power, for example, isn't revealed to be inside Force Edge with Dante/Vergil's amulets until you actually beat Nelo Angelo. In Devil May Cry 1, this is a random event that gives you the game's ultimate weapon (even though it kind of isn't? Seriously not being able to DT with Sparda until Mundus's fight is kind of crippling) whereas in DMC3 this is basically the plot of the entire game.

It's also important to note that DMC has like, 4 games and only 1 or 2 of those have "decent" stories. Compare that with how many Resident Evil games? Counting spin-offs and such?

this doesn't make DMC perfect however. An entire city being abandoned right as a giant demon tower just happens to be raised outside of Dante's headquarters and the most we get about anyone being there is some blood splatter in a strip-club? I mean, kind of harsh there for one thing. Raises many different questions for another.

What I'm SAYING is give shit time and quality of stories will inevitably drop. DMC3's story might've been pretty good (nothing spectacular mind you, but it was competent and gave each character an arc, which is sadly not something you see a lot in games) but DMC4 was definitely a step down (although that could've just been the fact Nero had a love interest that was ultimately as interesting as dirt) and it's quite possible shit might've got worse or actively made previous instalments look worse in retrospect.

Course a lot of that don't matter considering the series has p much rebooted right now, but eh.

[spoiler]The comms officier "mayday" and Rachel for example. The creepy part is that the repeated line, "This is a MAAaaaay Daaaay" isn't a recording. In the fight you can hear him say "Itchy tasty" and in raid mode I thought he said "I want coffee."

Rachel is almost hilarious, if she was that whiney while infected could you imagine how she must have been while alive? So far I've seen her say "That hurts," "kill you," and general laughter. I think she drops some names but I couldn't catch them.

I'm genuinely excited to get my hands on Revelations and RE6 as well, though. I love that they're improving the actual gameplay mechanics, 4 is a great game, but TPS + tank controls = why? I realise it was the progenitor, but in my eyes it just hasn't aged well in a lot of ways, it could just be me, I don't know. Still like the game, but would rather play 5 any day of the week simply because it plays better for me (and co-op really didn't hurt to have at all).

Either way, totes excited for the first two quarters of this year, with RE being the biggest highlight for me personally.

PS, yes I am dumb and will be buying a 3DS for Revelations, though there are finally some games I want other than RE on the system, so it's a no-lose situation for me, p. much.

Up to Chapter 5, and I'm very much enjoying the game thus far. This is my first time really using the Circle Pad, and I'm underwhelmed. The analog difference is very fickle, and I often feel that my character is barely speedwalking even at full tilt. I also don't like the face-button setup, and I'm mad that I don't have more config options for those. More than once I've wasted a spray because I press A thinking it will do something else. I do it less now as I'm more used to the controls, but mapping the ever-vital spray to the most easily-accessible button seems like a really bad decision to me.

And maybe I'm missing stuff, but there seems to be a lot less stuff to check out (nothing that impacts the game, just interesting comments) compared to previous RE games. Also it's extremely linear. There's some back-tracking to get to now-accessible areas, but not even like the first three RE games; hell, even RE4 had more back tracking thus far. Hopefully further areas will be more interesting.

Also, swimming in the pool was really tense; I was expecting tentacles or something to attack me. Kind of disappointing when nothing happened. Nice bounty at the end, though.

Why doesn't Capcom simply resease a Zombie-Fighting FF-type beat 'em up with Chris, Leon, Jill, Frank West, Chuck Greene, Regina, Guile, Zero, Dante, Virgil, CapCommando, and BB Hood for loli money?

I had an idea almost like that, taking all thier characters from the different survival horror series (Resident Evil, Dead rising, Dino Crisis) And letting the player choose from them to go out and kick some ass against the monsters with all sorts of weapons. Zombies, Dinosaurs, Zombie Dinosaurs? Hell its all good.

So, I really don't like the controls in Revelations. I've set it to approximate 5's controls, rather than 4's, but either way you can't move while shooting unless you're in control type C or have the second stick. When is the stupid circle pad pro going to stop being gamestop exclusive or sold on the internet? I want it because of reasons.

I'm using Type A and can move while shooting by holding L. It's very slow, but I can back up as I fire.

And I want a Pro, too, but all the Gamestops around me are still sold out. :(

The funny thing about this game is that Binary Domain by SEGA looks alot better even though it's a no name me too property. The shooting, animations, running and environments just look superior.

I guess after a while you do get used to the semi-tank controls, but at first it really drove me nuts. But without a second analog, it's probably a necessity.

When I informed a friend of mine that the PC version is going to be two months late for Raccoon City, he insisted I get the Xbox version. Being a good monkey, and having money on my debit card, I decided to check out any pre-order bonuses before getting it ordered (might as well, already know I'm going to enjoy it at least on a superficial level). Some weapon packs, costume packs, standard boring crap. The Special Edition comes with all the weapon and costume packs (as far as I can tell) anyway, so who cares about that?

But then I found out Capcom's website was offering an 18"x10" metal replica of the sign from the game, limited to 1000, I believe. Uh, yes, please, I would love to have you in my room, thank you.

All I saw was the extra outfits and the 'Nemesis mode' multiplayer DLC on the marketplace. Its more that the game just managed to sneak up on me since I kinda forgot about it when I couldn't order the special edition.

I think I saw the pre-order weapons packs for 400 MS points each. But yeah. I got sad when I found out the PC version wasn't coming out until May, then I caved and bought the Xbox 360 version.
>> No. 150576
So I finally got to spend some time with Operation Raccoon City. I must say, the beating this game is taking from critics and fans is way unnecessary. It's not groundbreaking, incredible, or anything like that... But it is damn fun, with or without co-op partners, the characters are pretty interesting from a personality perspective (no idea if it goes into their backstories other than the profiles it has in character select), the unlock system works just fine and encourages you to play the game better. It's a solid C to B, easily, even moreso if you're a fan of TPSes with cover systems. It is exactly what it promised it would be, SOCOM with some zombies.

I'd rather be playing on the PC, though. But that isn't coming out until May.

>> No. 150814

Yeah, there's not much in the way of character development in game. It's fucking SOCOM. And more importantly, the story is about Umbrella covering shit up, not the characters growing and being BFFs forever as they gun down Leon Kennedy.

You mean the 'Wesker Children'? As in all the special children given the surname Wesker and at some point in thier lives given the virus injection that gives them superhuman abilities, of which Albert was one of.

Yeah people were speculating that this was the case earlier in the thread, I'm just glad its not HUNK.

I can't watch the trailer at this moment but do we have any idea who the lucky lady is who recieved Complete Vaginal Impregnation, or was the WeskerJr just another science project Albert got up to when he had some spare time in the lab with a testtube.

Man I can't stand that they brought Sherry back in the trailer. Just like Ashely from RE4, she's an awful character who is only beloved by lolicons (you know what I mean since RE6 is not out yet).

Anyways, whatever happened to the characters of RE Revelations wasn't a special "bitch" who started the bio hazzard incident for RE6 that was a character from Revelations?
