I'm unfamiliar with MMO's, is 350,000 a great amount for an MMO in its' free month phase, or can we safely assume that TOR has hit the iceberg?

The further you get from human the more difficult it is for players to get into their mindset, the more difficult it is for all the other characters in the game to relate to them the same way. There are enormous technical obstacles, there is building all the lip synching, all the emotion into the face of the human is incredibly difficult and time consuming, doing that for something like a Wookiee – and we couldn't half do it, we couldn't let Wookiees be only a third as expressive as humans. No fuck that. Fuck you bioware. You know what race I enjoyed playing the most in Everquest? Iksar, fucking Lizard people. Why? They were fucking cool and had an interesting back story. You know what race I played in SWG? Wookiees. Because Wookiees are fucking awesome. Who the fuck doesn't want to play as a wookiee? People don't want to play a fucking star wars game because they can "Relate" to the races of their playable characters.

>There are enormous technical obstacles, there is building all the lip synching, all the emotion into the face of the human is incredibly difficult and time consuming, doing that for something like a Wookiee – and we couldn't half do it, we couldn't let Wookiees be only a third as expressive as humans. The first reason was obviously just a dumb excuse, this is the real reason. It certainly lends to the idea that they are lazy, but then again I understand how difficult doing shit like this can be. But they didn't really do a good job with the humans as it is. If you're going to cite this as a reason at least do a good fucking job on the ones you are actually doing.

Plus all a Wookie does is growl and walk around in a suit. Occasionally jump really far and beat shit up, are you seriously telling me that is hard to program or that there were viable realism constraints when all they did with light sabers was treat them as light sticks?

There wouldn’t be much lip synching involved as much as there is in fucking CLONE WARS ADVENTURES. BIOWARE COULD HAVE APED OFF ANOTHER STAR WARS GAME BESIDES THEIR PREVIOUS WORK AND NO ONE WOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM FLACK ABOUT IT.

>But really, wouldn’t that billing them even after they’re banned be able to be taken to court? That's out-right theft and cyber crime.

Not entirely. Depending on the terms of service agreement they might have a point stating that payment rendered will not be refunded in the case of a breach of terms. And even if it doesn't say that most TOS agreements have a clause where the company retains the right to change any and all terms in TOS agreement at any point, in any way and without notification.

The second you click "I agree" you basically give them carte blanche in regards to your usage, which is entirely the point. It's there to cover their ass after all. It would be far more effective to kick up a huge stink and have them face a PR crisis than actually suing them.

That's what chargebacks are for.

Also, I would assume that banned people are not being charged further. Just because someone can't get to the payment screen when they're banned doesn't mean they're keeping the info and charging the card indefinitely.

I mean, they banned the person. It's FAR more likely that they just deleted the payment info from their system. I'm pretty sure that's what other MMO providers do.

Your thinking hinges on BioWare/EA dealing with that matter in a logical, appropriate manner. Given their track record of doing the exact opposite when dealing with their customers, finding that they did something right for a change would be stunning. Remember to completely remove your payment info from your account details.

The reason EA/Bioware required you to enter payment info before getting your free month is so they can charge you immediately when the time is up. Even if you didn't plan to continue playing the game. EA has been known to make frivolous charges against accounts in the past. If you search "ea double charge scam" you'll find documented evidence of this. So make sure you remove all payment info and keep a keen eye on all transactions made to your credit involving EA/Bioware.

More news! A disgruntled EA employee started a blog named ealouse to bitch about EA, and in the process spilled some beans concerning TOR. Unfortunately the blog itself is now taken down, but if you just copy and paste any of the following >greentext into google search you can find people discussing it. His rants are long and detailed bitchfits about specific EA employers, but he had this to say in regards to TOR:

>And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that?
>And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking , and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.
>Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online. We all know it too.
What does /cog/ think? Clever troll or disgruntled employee firing off and revealing too much?

>>143921
Some of my friends are playing TOR right now. However they are fully aware of all this shitstorms surrounding TOR and are only playing until they finish their campaigns/until free month is over, then they're shelving it. I get the feeling that a lot of TOR players are like that, which brings in the next problem: If your players only want to do the pseudo-single player campaign how are you going to milk them for subscription fees?

>Labelling Star Wars: The Old Republic competent but not innovative is "unfair", BioWare told Eurogamer - the MMO does more than today's FPS and action games to push its respective genre forward.

>The user rating of Star Wars: The Old Republic on Metacritic is lower, however - but Ohlen was quick to explain why he thinks that is.

>"Oh that's easy," he retorted. "Several of the designers were watching the Metacritic page when it finally came up and what happened was there is a community out there, and we don't know who they are - it could be a bunch of different people - who aren't really playing the game but have a vested interest in hating the game. And we saw literally hundreds of 0/10s come up within the first couple of hours of Metacritic coming on. So it was people who weren't even playing the game basically putting on that they hated it.

>"We knew that there was going to be people who wanted us to fail. But that's just the nature of the game. If you're going to build a huge game and try to go out to a lot of people, you're going to have people who just react poorly."

Yeah, and my fanfiction is inspired by Dostoevsky because it’s DEEP, dark and sexy. Dragon Age doesn't have the chops to back that statement, much less would I respect such a juvenile claim like "it allows us to be mature" when anyone involved in the company haven't been that in about 10 years.

To be fair, American TV producers don't really take risks on adult-oriented animation that's not comedy or anime for the most part (and even with anime, serious stuff aimed at adults is fairly rare), and the direct-to-video market is not as big. Maybe they'd make an exception what with it being an established property, like they do with that GI Joe special Warren Ellis did, but they'd have a lot more success with a serious anime than they would with a serious American cartoon.

Maybe if they were focusing on other markets than the US they might have more success though.

Looks better then when a capital ship crashes in TOR (its akin to watching old '50s stuff and them just cutting the strings holding it up there)

Not Star Wars, Bioware and it has to do with the fact Dragon Age two was where it started to head down the shitter, or at least that's what I understand f it.

No it's been a lot longer than that. KOTOR 1 was the last game they made that could just be called "good" without any qualifying statements.

Nah. With the usual D20 system problems, the lack of any real choice and consequence, and the usual Bioware bland story, I'd say it's as good as Mass Effect 1 and 2.

What was the qualifying statement in ME1? "Except the Mako bits?"

Same question, but with Jade Empire. Was it the length? Because JE was very short for an RPG.

The gameplay in general is shit in ME1.

>>144208
Jade Empire was an extremely flawed game overall. Clunky gameplay, boring characters, the beginning of Bioware's obsession with shitty sex scenes...

Still, the whole Chinese myth thing was unique enough to merit a once through.

So are Jesse and TB still positive about this? I haven't been watching mailboxes but I'd be surprised if the latter hasn't gotten mail about this stuff, especially the account reactivation thing.

Gods I wish GW2 would come out already.

Some will try and say they started going down earlier with Jade Empire, as that was when Bioware really started experimenting and moving away from the d20 system. However DA2 is also a good choice, EA bought up Bioware around the time DA1 was released and plans for DA2 were still in infancy, with the results of EA's involvement being self-evident.
