I hear ya. I have a nasty tendency to default to an "attractive" face if anything just because it's been a simple shorthand developed over years. Even while consciously trying to make her older, the effect doesn't always pan out when I step back from it. Here though, when I tried pushing it further she tended to look not at all like Azula. And it wasn't as if she started looking like Ursa either. But I'm just making excuses at this point, when I draw cartoons the same face effect hits me pretty hard.

I had a class with an abstract painter and my brother is literally a lighting scientist. I think that helps a bit.
Actually, thanks for that. I should like to be better at light, but I think I can say that it's something I wish more comics focused on. Or even going full Bokeh for backdrops, the results could be really breathtaking when done right. I'm not quite there yet, and I'm making things easier on myself with a rather monochromatic color scheme but I like to think I'm on to something.
