There were numerous examples of things not to do in the episode. Kids ain't dumb, even if they do like some things spelled out for them once in awhile. Situations in which the other characters actually spelled out to Pinkie how her hyperactivity was abrasive and offputting were one of them. Twilight's exasperation that Pinkie continued to do things without any change of strategy or dialing back. That whole bit with the wig seemed like it was -supposed- to be cringeworthy, if only as an example of what not to do.
Sure, the resolution was very improbable, but again, it's a show for children. They'll get a more banal introduction to not-so-happy-ending stories in another year or two, but I don't see much of a difference between how this episode were handled and the way say, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh were handled. All in all, I'd say it was a step in the right direction in a lot of ways, and the whole wishy washy moral at the end thing is just part of the theme. Sometimes it's tacked on, sometimes it's relevant.
