ITT: Marvel Comics General

And Lo, A Moon Bear Shall Lead It.

It began in a thread with the following prompt

>ITT: Norman Osborn wants you in his Dark Avengers, and has given you a choice of who you want to impersonate/mock.

>Choose an established hero (Cap, Hulk, Thing, Daredevil, Strange, Hawkeye, Wolverine etc.)

>Now hit up this link for your actual superpower:
http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Random

>How well can you fill your chosen role?

And then it mutated into something else entirely.

Bear Grim, Bearter Bearker, Bearverine, Norman Osbear, Beareye...

And this.

It was Amazing.

Like Spider-Bear.

Anyway...um... feel free to discuss, I don't know, The Avengers or something. Any of them are fine really, it's a general thread after all.

Personally, i think Captain Abearica is the best of the bunch, only a real cub scout can lead the Ursine Avengers.

DC and Cartoon Network aren't the only ones planning to have an animated block dedicated to superhero cartoons. That is, unless Disney and Marvel punks us by showing another Phineas & Ferb marathon on April 1st:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/BatFreak/news/?a=52503

>Marvel has announced that a new programming block called Marvel Universe will be launched on Disney XD April 1st, later this year. Among the programs that will be aired are Ultimate Spider-Man (which will make its series premiere in April) and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (which will be returning for its second season). The Marvel website describes the program as the ultimate place for fans to find exclusive Marvel content, including animated shorts and live action interstitials.

DC Nation vs Marvel Universe! Who will reign supreme!?

Neither, because the Archie Backyard animation block will outdo them all!

Scarlet Spider is everything I hoped it wouldn't be, which is a damn shame.

Takes itself 100% serious, blah blah blah back from the dead, yadda yadda living for myself, hurp derp struggling to chose between normal life and superheroics.

EVERY. SINGLE. CLICHE.

It's like a hodgepodge of every "WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH THIS CHARACTER" comic you've ever read, not ones you haven't, because something original may have happened in those.

The minisodes weren't that impressive and focused a bit too much on world building, but once everything go underway and Gamma World began, it really got good. Remember when Mark Waid mocked DC over his twitter about getting paid by Marvel for online sales. He ended his tweet by saying “Marvel: 1, DC: 0″. Well, it looks like the score is tied now:

http://blog.newsarama.com/2012/01/13/charles-vess-it-would-be-nice-if-marvel-actually-paid-creators/

>It would be nice if they actually paid the creators whose work they are reprinting. A year after their Warrior’s Three collection which featured a cover and over 100 pages of my work I received one (!!) comp copy and no word of any sort of reprint or royalty fee. Of course it might not have sold very well. Now I see that they are cobbling together 3 or 4 Spider-Man GNs into one enormous, hideously produced, hardcover. My long ago GN ‘Spirits of the Earth’ which I wrote/drew/painted is one of them. We’ll see what they do about that one. In contrast, DC provides 25 comp copies and a royalty check sent ever 4 months. Hmmm… now who would you work for?

I'll admit it's only worked once for me, but not in the sense that it helped me buy a book, just that I liked the change: The Blade movie. Just the first one, mind, the second one was okay, but the third was...well, dumb.

They tooled around Blade to have the same looks and powers as the Wesley Snipes version. Granted, I never bought an issue of Blade...or anything he was in, I'm not sure if he was ever in his own ongoing or anything. But still, do you realize that movie is 14 years old by this point? That's even older than the first X-Men movie. That's how long Marvel has stolen ideas from their own movies.

Being a little dishonest is better than being a lot dumb. The shared universe can help or hinder a book, and the quality of the story always comes first. As such, the shared universe being consistent should not be a hard and fast rule in terms of how much it applies to things.

The mutant racism bit is still sort of dumb sometimes, and can be REALLY dumb like in the latest event. But other superheroes existing shouldn't be what validates or invalidates its existence.

You may very well feel that way but you're advocating turning the book into a generic superhero book where everyone is accepted for having superpowers.

Pointless. Let books keep what makes them unique. If you have to surgically remove the very things that make titles distinct to make them fit into the shared universe, then the shared universe isn't worth it.
