I am trying to tack some down at the moment with the klassics.

I really want to read all the Diabolik and similar character comics.
I've heard very good comments from them.

Diabolik is really neat spy stuff and sexy time, Satanik reads like a weird /d/ manga, but it's still got some incredible moments, Kriminal is hard to tack down because most of his stories are "I dress like a Skeleton, fuck up bad guys, make their plan into something worse and the whole time this is going on I'm molesting a lady."

Is it just me or is the Euro scanslation community extremely small (and rather clannish)?

Almost every euro comic I read has the exact same dialog peculiarities in style and minor errors; very literal translations that don't read very well with little editing done beyond grammar and spelling. Nearly all of them read like late '90's manga scanslations.

Currently trying to justify to myself spending 230 quid on all of Thorgal.

Anyways I was thinking about the regional differences of comics, and what I concluded was that Europe is great at having a story told conclusively in one issue (which is why, for example, the series subtitle takes precedence over the number) meanwhile manga is the opposite telling one long decompressed story over many volumes. The US lands somewhere in the middle.

I find most aren't scanlated at all, but just scans so my experience is limited.

At least you can hop over the Channel to buy them ;_;. Cinebook pretends the US doesn't even exist is my experience, and paying overseas shipping rapes my wallet.

Being able to read them in the original French would be nice. If I ever take a language class, it'll be that. However, would that limit me? What's the ratio of Dutch titles to French ones, or does it matter?

It's so completely devoid of plot, yet so visually interesting I love it.

In contract Satanik has a pants on head retarded plot, but it's so dumb it's more than worth following.

France by far makes the most, it's a huge market for comics. To the point where the Spanish creators of Blacksad prefer to publish for that market, meaning it's out in French before it's out in Spanish or Catalan. Hence all the hubbub about Franco-Belgian comics, calling them bande dessinée etc etc.. Think of it like how most British talent goes to the US.

I haven't actually read any Dutch comics but I've been keeping an eye out if I do see them, for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_(Don_Lawrence) looks pretty cool.

Also if you're keen on learning a language you're better off with children's books where the dialogue isn't that important.

Most of the European scanlation community is Europeans translating from their native language to English (to have a good translation, it's better to do it the other way around).

How cool is that, I don't even like Tintin and I want it.

Oof. Yeah, that would explain the overly literal translations.

Haha, holy shit, we're fucking blowing the Americans out of the water. Where Marvel and DC are doing same-price digital and print comics, this site is proposing bandes dessinées for less than half the price of the print option. 4€99 for 50 to 60 pages in a bigger format than American comics. Haha. Way to go.

There's also http://www.digibidi.com which does stuff from other publishers, unfortunately only in French and I honestly can't tell how much it costs.

Dark Horse nearly did the right thing going digital but they pussied out last minute.

"Excellent, our digital storefront is finished. Pretty soon our customers will be able to purchase e-comics right over the web, and we won't have to pay Diamond cent anymore."

"Wait, if the consumers can purchase the content with no tangible distribution chain between them and the artist's own files, what do they or the artists need us for?"

"..."

"FUCKFUCKFUCK shut it down now, hurry!!!"

Comics in Europe aren't overwhelmingly controlled by two companies fixated on a single genre, either. Suffice to say they have a better business sense.

>mfw I found two of the Willie Rushton-voiced Asterix audiobooks in a charity shop for £1.50 each

I really don't understand why these haven't been re-released on CD...
