/baw/, why aren't you working out right now? Ladies, why aren't you doing your squats? When was the last time any of you went for a run? Your bodies are falling apart, you know. If real life were an RPG, guys like Brad Pitt would be the heroes, guys like me would be the NPCs, and you guys would be the giant rats that people grind on to gain exp in the beginning of the game. Step your shit up, man.

Fitness is ALWAYS relevant to your class. What good is being a doctor if you can't get out of bed in the morning? What good is getting married to a handsome man if he can't even find your pussy under all the fat? What good is making a fortune in finance if you drop dead at 50? What good is it running a successful imageboard if you can't even lift one of your many concubines up and throw them into your bed?

Exercise is always relevant to your class. I exercise regularly and eat healthily for health reasons. But more than thirty minutes of exercise-for-exercise's-sake a day doesn't strike me as useful for anyone except those who need to be strong or those who have body image issues. It might be fun for some people who don't fit either of those categories, and if so, more power to them. But it's still three more hours until my nightly bike ride, so I'm working on other things instead.

I'm not working out right now because I work out at night before I go to bed. I'm not a lady. I went for a tun two days ago. Not yesterday because I got enough exercise spending three hours raking leaves and taking a ton of stuff to the dump.

Brad Pitt is an old man who paid money to look good (so in the sense that paying real cash into a modern RPG actually will get you experience and better armor and shit, yes you might have a point there) and has nothing on me. I could break his nose with a scowl.

Of course, I cheat at the RPG of life. I gain exp. twice as fast as everyone else. I can kill one slime and be a master of swordsmanship. That old axiom that it takes 10,000 hours to be an expert at something? It takes me 2,000. As for exercise? Meh. I do an hour a day and eat like 10 pounds of candy a day, and it all evens out. My brain consumes the excess energy, and instead of getting lazy and slogged down, eating more calories makes me SMARTER. Imma hacking this bitch right here.

Seeing as how I've gained back 100 pounds and fucked up my back since then, things will probably never get better. No matter how much I eat, I just seem to burn it away.
Recently I've begun to consume:
-0.5l of non diet coke per day
-Bars of sickers distributed across the day (280 calories each I think).
-PASTAH! with cheese right before bedtime
-That powdered stuff you pour into milk which serves as 1 meal.

It's difficult cause most products emphasize on weight loss rather than weight gain. I'd try animal fat, but I can't that slimy, chewing-gum-like stuff. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Unfortunately I share something with That Guy; inability to gain weight. I've got digestive issues in chronic pain/discomfort/other unpleasantries, but after getting expensive blood work done, there doesn't appear to be anything 'wrong' with me.

From 13-17 I went from 130 to 165 when belly issues were less and I could gain and lose muscle by the week. 165 is the heaviest I've ever been, and that was pure muscle.
17-26 I coasted on 150 pounds. Couldn't gain nor lose anything. Kind of felt like I was trapped.
Last year I got some kind of neck and muscle problem that made swallowing feel like god was choking me for two months solid, and kept threatening to push food and liquids into my wind pipe. So I minimized meals. Dropped to 135.

Now I hover between 138-145. Odd enough my digestive problems and faintness problems seem to've remissed. Now it might be possible to actually replace lost calories from exercise without my intestines rioting and actually put on some muscle and bone mass.

You have to strip the sugar backbone from amino acids for fuel and the rest has to go somewhere. Namely, putting workload on your kidneys, something which they will not appreciate Plus it's wasteful of good protein.
>> No. 341902
>>341888
Proteins have no sugar backbone. Proteins are made of peptide bonds, which are four-atom repeating units involving the carboxyl and amino groups of individual amino acids. Nucleic acids have a sugar backbone, but there's nowhere near enough of those in your food for you to live on.
>> No. 341913

Fuck, I'm letting my biology go rusty again.

But you know what I'm getting at. The use of protein for energy is profligate and wasteful when carbohydrates are cheaper and require less energy to grow. It's like burning two-by-fours when you can get cords of firewood. Not to mention, you have to get rid of the byproducts, and your kidneys won't enjoy that.
.....
From what I've reading, high protein-low carbohydrate diets have been coming and going for the last 30 years. Pretty much all of that time they've been considered ineffective (or to put it in less pleasant fashion: crap) by the medical community. At best, they are ineffective at what they are supposed to do. At worst, they are actively harmful.

Atkins is voodoo. Honestly, I feel like pretty much all diets are voodoo except the Food Pyramid. Which isn't even really a diet.

Honestly, your body will tell you what you should and shouldn't be eating pretty clearly if you just stop and listen to it. Eat when you're hungry, don't eat when you don't, and avoid stuff that makes you feel bad and try to eat stuff that makes you feel good. You may enjoy a McDonald's hamburger, but have you ever really felt good after eating one, if you're being honest with yourself? Sugar is delicious, but anything that makes you crash that hard after eating it is clearly not something you want to eat all the time.

Also, for all the hell carbs get, I defy you to find someone who's ever gotten fat from eating bananas.

As you can see in this photo, I'm not very big at the moment (nor have I been for the past decade). But still, in that photo I'm 75.6 Kg. Today I ate scrambled eggs on wholemeal toaste, with caramelized onions, bacon, mushrooms and hash browns for breakfast. I skipped lunch due to having a very late breakfast and a very bad migraine, and then had chickpea dahl with roti and vegetarian mee goreng for dinner. Hello carbohydrates! Ideally, I should have had the carbo-laden dinner at breakfast and the protein rich breakfast at dinner, and obviously I should have eaten something for lunch, too. Eating enough food is something you have to train your body to do. After my years of PARTY TIME (read: amphetamines), I discovered that I could eat a meal one third the size (maybe half the size if it was something ludicrously delicious) as when I was lifting properly (and weighed 90 Kg with <10% body fat).

To expound what I was saying, there is no, "I DO JUMPING JACKS AND GET HUGE BECAUSE ALL EXERCISE IS THE SAME"

Swimming, jogging and the like build cardio, which is really the most useful.

Strong men build weight, to an ABSURD SCALE and eat AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

Body Builders build weight and balance it with cardio while starving themselves. It is not the slightest bit healthy.

Almost everything you can do builds definition.

Don't get easily discouraged, if you are in it for the purely physical side of things...that's not really good and you should be doing it for health reasons, though I understand the appeal. I'll tell you this, you plateau, it happens, if you do you should just see a dietician.

And candlejack, I went back through my records, the thing about being an endomorph is that you burn calories fast, the trick is too eat more, specially before you go to bed, take supplements too

Man, I'm really lacking happy/excited reaction images. This is close enough I guess.

Guys what stretches or warm-ups should I be doing before say going for a run?

Work your way up to a run and do your stretches afterwards when your muscles are warmed up.

To a small extent, it depends on the distance.

If you're doing anything less than about 5 miles, you can get away with not stretching at all. Your running might be a bit off, but you should loosen up in about a mile. For longer distances, stretching becomes a better idea, but is not a complete imperative if you're just running recreationally.

For short to medium distances, running is your best warm-up for running. Do a mile or so at a slow pace (maybe 13-14 mins/mile), then pick it up toward your normal running pace.

For stretching, there's some people who say you don't really need to stretch at all. Whatever you decide to do, you should try to be consistent. If you're training for a race, keep your same routine through training and race day. Some good info on stretches here: http://www.time-to-run.co.za/capetown/stretching/debate.htm

But the basics of it are that you want to stretch gently, no matter what you do. If you're doing static stretches (the ones everyone does, where you hold a pose), don't force it, and whatever you do don't do that thing where you bounce in and out of the limit of your range of motion. That's a surefire way to injure yourself.

There's also dynamic stretches, which are basically stretching your muscles in a way that mimics real, albeit exaggerated, movement. There's some good video guides to it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dynamic+stretching

But like I said, unless you're being super competitive and want to be competitive in races (or outright win) you can generally get away with not stretching, especially when starting out or for low mileage. Just listen to your body, take it easy if you detect some pain, and go easy when you start your run. Or you might decide that not stretching causes pain you can otherwise avoid.

It's all about finding what makes you most comfortable. It's easy to go overboard with stretches and warmups by following all the recommended routines; you can easily end up spending a half hour just stretching before you even get to running. In my opinion, one of the strengths of running as exercise is that you can just throw some shoes and shorts on, step out the door, and be on your way. You don't need expensive equipment (at least not when you're starting out), you don't need protective gear, you don't need spotters or other people with you, you just need your own body. Spending too much time stretching and running in general loses interest for me. I prefer to just skip stretching and get right to it.

So, I got some new (adjustable) dumbbells. I figured 10Kg would be enough for my under-developed pectorialis muscles for the next couple of weeks. Turns out I was wrong, and thus my pectorialii are condemned to be under-developed until I can convince Mrs Shrike that we need to spend more money on weights.

In the mean time: flies! Flies everywhere!

Can you return the dumbbells that you just bought? In the meantime, chasing and swatting flies is good exercise!
