>Director tells me that tonight's the annual "LGBT-Religious student conference" which is designed to "promote a healthy tolerable relationship between the LGBTQ community and the Religious communities on campus", he says it'll be fun, and asks if I can be there as a speaker.
>Say "Of course I'll be there, sounds fun!"
>"Oh I mean my main speaker. Still want it?
>"Oh yeah, sign me up!"
>Find out from other club members that last year was a disaster that almost erupted into a fist-fight and ended with some of the students leaving crying. This year now has to have ground rules set in place from the get-go.

You don't need luck, you need a lot of booze and to leave your faith in religious people at the door.
I've sometimes pondered how worth it it'd be to learn Hebrew just to read the non-paraphrased translations of the bible (specifically the New Testament) and figure out how much of the new testament overwrites and disregards the old, just to properly argue with these people. But then I remember learning languages is a lot of work, most religious people don't even read their source work and even the people citing source work tend to apply it incorrectly when it suits them and then deny anything to the contrary.

Hoo boy. You have my sympathies. Do you believe that the new ground rules will be effective against the old problems?

You can do it. Believe it or not, lots of religious people and even clergy are for equality. From my own life, my gf, who reads the bible daily, and a priest I confessed to who told me "get help, it's not a sin, the Vatican is wrong on these matters". The Scriptures are meaningless without exegesis, and our understanding is ever evolving. While some use religion and scripture to oppose progress and divide God's children, others use it to advance and unite. It's all up to us.

Feel free to use any of that.

Not just one language! The New Testament was in the original Koine Greek. So you'd have to learn two languages that survive only as liturgical languages. Fun times!

The first meeting was basically making everyone aware of the ground-rules, which words are considered offensive, what to do when someone says something you take insult to, etc. My little speech was well-received and the only hiccup was, when talking about society and gays, one man said "but if we allow gay marriage what's to say we won't be allowing polygamy or pedophile marriage or even bestiality marriage?". But mostly we all had a surprisingly pleasant, if tense, time, and are planning a social gathering soon.

Mostly boring probably. I doubt it'll include all the fun parts of heterosexuality the way pride parades include all the fun parts of the GLBT community: no straight crossdressers, fetishists, BDSM folk, porn stars, straight swingers, no costumes, no boozing, no nudity. just old people, married folks, and self-loathing closet cases in tacky formal/semi-casual shuffling down the street.

>>334303

Congrats! And sorry about the church thing. There are websites that list gay-friendly congregations, or else just find a quiet place, ideally surrounded by nature.

Try a modern Methodist church.
They're generally more open.

I've always thought churches that turn away 'sinners' to be a little counter productive. Forgetting the old splinter and log verse.

>The attackers also verbally assaulted the couple continually with anti-gay verbiage which continued even after a Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on the scene. Bystanders and other congregants made no effort to stop the assault. For that matter, neither did the Deputy Sheriff. Once the barrage of punches ended, the Deputy refused to let the two victims press charges.

Fire that asshole. Now.

As for the rest, I can't even. Just rage and disgust.

The Church can do whatever it wants. It's been proven to be above the law many, many times already. Especially in areas with very powerful congregations, the police and lawmakers are also members of the church, and of course do their bidding like good parishioners do.

Also, the idea that students in school have "first amendment rights" is total bull. They can enforce whatever dress-code they want, regardless of whether it impacts one group over another. Case in point, in southern California, it's common to disallow sports gear (as baseball caps and jerseys) and clothes of certain colors, both which are commonly used as symbolism by area gangs.

He's actually slightly right, although only just barely. High school students don't have quite the First Amendment protections while they're in school that, say, college students or normal adults do.

Public school administrations have a small degree of capability to censor students' speech when it complies with their educational mandate. It's pretty much limited to things like school newspapers (when the newspaper is used as a supervised learning tool rather than an open forum for student voices).

Good sport, great homoeroticism. Also my team is probably one of the most openly "pro"-gay teams out there, makes me proud as anything every time I hear them talk about it. They're the 4th best team in the world right now, with some of the most famous players on earth and they speak often about how they openly support and encourage gay players to come out (if they want to), and advocate patience and respect from fans and staff alike. One of the 7416471645 reasons why Bayern are the best. <3

For a really fucking good book with bonus gay sprinkled on top, try Bitter Eden. It's written by an 80 year old ex-POW...about POW camps? It's fiction, but he based it on his own experiences. Easily one of my favourite books.

As a person who was raised by christians, I know that gay people are veiwed as sinners and will eventually go to hell blah blah blah bring about the return of Satan, thousand years of darkness, endless torture and so on.

But I was wondering what are other faiths thoughts on homosexuality; like do jewish people think that they're sinners as well?

That's because those texts were written in a time where homos where shunned. Write a holy book today and... Oh wait, you can't. People rather believe in books written millenia ago than today, despite the same conditions. Sucks to be gay I guess.

Well, the thing is, Leviticus was mostly a survival guideline for the 12 tribes. Things to keep them from spreading disease and things to keep their population high.

People today take it way too much to heart. Even Jesus defied some of the old laws, because even he could understand the pointless nature of the laws in the society they where in.
"why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?"
