This episode, man... I'm really amazed. The animation is great, the music succeeds at that "Asian jazz" thing they were wanting, and I love the voice work.
It's interesting, the whole approach of keeping Korra all locked up in a compound during her training. I imagine that, since it was really close to her parents' home, it was something they started building once they found where the Avatar was. I can see its usefulness to keep her safe, especially if the anti-bending movement was already underway at that time, but damn I wonder if she had any childhood friends except Naga.
Speaking of Naga, I'm in love with this character now. And she really is a character, more expressive than Appa. This was the first footage I saw where the "dog" part showed through, and Naga is definitely good dog best friend.
Katara's just there to provide continuity and have all that requisite dialogue so the audience doesn't have to see the comic-con talk to know who Tenzin/Meelo/Ikki/Jinora/Pema are. Something of a whirlwind conversation but got all of the basic characters set up. I already love Tenzin and Pema as exhausted parents who can't hold all these Airbenders. Jinora's sweet, Ikki's hilarious and is great at cutting off stories about Zuko's mom, and Meelo actually is awesome despite my initial reservations. UNHAND ME STRANGE WOMAN
Republic City looks awesome and I really hope that we get an official high-detail map of the whole place (50 internet points to whoever makes Republic City in Minecraft).
Naga actually looks ferocious. There were times when Appa was supposed to be intimidating but I never felt it, but man look at those teeth and wide eyes as Naga prepares to chow down on those kebabs.
Oh, and
>20 yuan for a few kebabs
Korra honey you're getting so ripped off. That many kebabs shouldn't be more than 5 yuan tops, trust me.
>dat bum
And no I'm not talking about Korra. That vagabond is quite the character, and really shows how snappy the dialogue is.
When it came time for the fight with the gang, it really did a good job of showing Korra as inexperienced with all of this. "Hoodlum"? Sounds so "HALT EVILDOERS." And her laughter after beating the "chumps," and that growl in her voice as she yells "you're not getting away!"? Really showing she's out of control.
I can't wait to see more of Lin Bei Fong; she's serious enough to be a good semi-antagonist (but not villain of course) for Korra.
I can't help but always be reminded of good ol' GJr. Murph and I both thought one of the reporters at the end looked like GJr!Yue, and I imagine young Yi Lin to be just like Ikki.
I am so excited for this show!
