I miss embedding.

So I've been amusing myself with an idle thought for the past while about what Yue's up to after the adventure. I like to think that she got into Ba Sing Se University at a relatively young age and spends a lot of her time on Earthbending-related research/engineering projects, usually designing compact stone devices that can unfold and be useful in some way.

Probably my favorite idea along these lines is a sort of massive "golem" that rises from the ground, which Yue can manipulate from a distance through some sort of earthen attachments circling her limbs (in my head it resembles that SC2 trailer with all the robotic arms putting armor on that Marine :P). As long as it has a direct connection with the ground, she can move it. It's the sort of thing where Yue would write reports about how such a thing could have practical value for construction or whatever, but she does it because she thinks it's just plain cool and she likes the challenge of having to keep all the schematics and operations of the system constantly in her mind for it to function.

And of course Hayoda comes to visit and convinces her to have it wander the city, inevitably causing havoc.

I think it's pretty apparent that just this image didn't really convey the idea. I'm sure that decontextualized, it must seem an even stranger and more salacious situation than intended. So I'll just go ahead and try to summarize this idea that TDL and I had been thinking about for the past while, and let you all think of it what you will.

This thought starts with Jing, having recently become friends with Nikiru, finding out about her crush on Yi Lin (as if it wasn't obvious to anyone in the world besides Yi Lin), maybe Nikiru actually admits it to Jing. Now Jing's sympathetic to Nikiru's "plight" and finds her attraction to Yi Lin cute, and also has always been the sort of person who likes to take any situation she's presented with and poke it looking for a reaction. So in the interest of pushing them along a little so Nikiru can indulge in her crush a little more, and in the interest of keeping herself entertained, Jing takes Yi Lin shopping for what are overtly exercise clothes but are undeniably skimpier -- not that Yi Lin really notices this sort of thing when it comes to her own body (if there's one thing that defines Yi Lin and relationships or attractiveness, it's that she has a blind spot about herself).

Anyway, Jing basically invites Yi Lin to work out with her, with Yi Lin duped into dressing up in something bound to elicit a response from Nikiru, and then boxes in Nikiru by suggesting the girl give Yi Lin a massage afterward to help her unwind -- a scenario where Nikiru's desires would threaten to step over those lines of self-restraint and plausibly deniable actions that she set up out of fear of rejection.

Predictably, this is indeed what happens. Nikiru gets absorbed in the massage rather deeply (to say nothing of Yi Lin) and suffice it to say that she goes a little further and friskier than she had anticipated. (One of the ideas we had was that, among other things, Nikiru accidentally discovers the dimples on Yi Lin's lower back to be exceptionally sensitive.)

Afterwards, Yi Lin is somewhat confused and probably only partially understands what happened, or if she does, doesn't associate it with anything romantic or sexual. As far as she sees it, the massage felt nice, she feels relaxed, and Nikiru must obviously be talented masseuse. Nikiru, on the other hand, likely starts freaking out the moment she has a sober moment to herself: flustered, embarrassed, afraid of ruining her friendship. Jing's reassurances probably do little to allay her fears, compared to when Yi Lin shows up some time later, naive about the whole situation and actually mentioning that she looks forward to the next time she works out with Nikiru around.

So in the context of this idea, there's a new additional sort of interaction between the two. Nikiru pushed that line pretty far, and Yi Lin was okay with that, and so Nikiru feels more comfortable and bold being closer. Of course, this isn't some radical overnight change, and knowing Nikiru she would likely second-guess herself for a while, but there's a very definite change that has happened for both of them in how they interact. It's really the first time where Yi Lin really is eager to be with Nikiru not just as a listening ear or a friend, but with an actual physical interaction. It's like Nikiru is "allowed" to actually be comfortable touching Yi Lin, or at least it's not an "avoided" thing. Heck, if Nikiru wants to, she can run her hands over Yi Lin's body or unapologetically check her over in that exercise outfit and that's fine.

If someone asked her why she's fine with it, she'd probably answer "why not" -- I don't see Yi Lin ever really having an ingrained sense of personal boundaries around herself, and even if it wasn't Nikiru I don't think she'd inherently recoil, but also just the sheer amount of positive attention Yi Lin gets from Nikiru is something pleasantly unprecedented for her. Yi Lin might get the giggles over it the first couple of times to cover any nerves she might have...but after a certain point, she just enjoys the attention.

And that's got to be an interesting new feeling for Yi Lin -- being someone who's the center of attention for someone else physically. Of course, Nikiru still listens to her and loves her stories and all that, and Yi Lin has always loved being paid attention to, but it's always been because of the insane things she does or because she's an Airbender, and never really because of how she looks. Not pretty or ugly, or even plain for that matter, just null; until this, she'd think of nice-looking clothing, but never think of looking nice in them. Maybe that's a sense Jing and then Nikiru help cultivate in her.

As an aside, I can't help but imagine a brief vain phase of Yi Lin thinking she's suddenly become really attractive overnight or something, and then having to reevalute after realizing no one but Nikiru particularly feels that way. :P And of course when Yi Lin realizes that only Nikiru seems to really look at her that way, that's yet another of the several dozen flashing neon signs Yi Lin will need before she finally realizes what Nikiru's feelings are for her and what her own feelings back are.

As for the massages themselves, in this sort of situation they'd probably become a regular thing, testing that line that neither really mind testing. Nikiru would probably encourage Yi Lin to train more to have an excuse to properly get her hands on her. "I like watching you train," and so forth. And it has a positive effect for the naive yet eager Yi Lin, as she's actually improving her Airbending rather than giving into that stereotypical "training later, let's go penguin-sledding" Airbender attitude she typically has. Amusingly, they both say they're doing what they are for reasons other than the real ones -- a very roundabout way of saying 'Do you want a massage?'. Just part of this odd ritual they have, I suppose.

And Hayoda and Tseng won't complain. "You know, Tseng: we should get Nikiru to travel with us more often; Yi Lin takes preparing for adventure much more seriously when she's around!"

So this is the weird way those two are in this idea we had been batting around. The two of them aren't really together, Yi Lin still isn't fully aware of what all this means and what her feelings mean, but to Nikiru it feels more like they're together and she doesn't need to hide the acts of affection she had been keeping back out of fear of outright rejection. So while the nature of their relationship is still dysfunctional -- maybe even more so -- it's got to at least be a relief for our poor, perpetually-frustrated princess. Doesn't stop it from being weird, though; Yi Lin and Nikiru are always weird when I think about them.

So anyway yeah. I hope I was able to convey the concept without getting too lurid in the details; we had considered this to be something more than mere /34/ despite the subject matter at its core because of strange and interesting way it affects their dynamic, but people can take this however they want to.

ALRIGHT. Away from the romance stuff, I found myself doing this drawing an hour ago and thought I'd put it up here in the rough.

It's Tom-Tom after (in my canon) his first fight with Fenghuang. It didn't end so well for him, as you can gather. After this confrontation (end of season 2) he quits the navy in search of a firebending teacher; a journey which he takes alone, leaving the kids for Toph to watch over.

Due to absolutely no demand, I cleaned it up a little. Enjoy!

On a side note, I was looking for the previous thread on the old board and realized it was gone, but checking the thread archive made me realize that the last three or four threads before that weren't archived. Did anybody manage to snag those, because I don't like the idea that they and their pictures are gone.

So! Since we have Legend of Korra on the way next year, I was bored at work thinking about what that means for Gaang Jr. It's had it's seat moved from "plausible extended universe" to "plausible alternate universe" and I figured why not take it a step further?

I started imagining "what if it isn't Tenzin who's tasked with teaching Korra Airbending, but a now senior Yi Lin?"

Then I went to town with ideas and doodles:

The design's pretty radical, I know. Basically, I just tossed together everything I thought would make for a neat idea and came out with a tall, Airbending, one-eyed Genkai from Yu Yu Hakusho in terms of how she looks. Regardless, it was fun thinking of it. I figure it'll only change as we learn more about Korra.

That said, the more radical ideas of my little head-canon experiment are actually all the snippets and conversations I had regarding what I thought should happen:

Now, I figured this would have caused a whole mess of Drama™ between Yi Lin, her family, friends, and especially Nikiru. I had two more snippets on that thing that were full of Drama™ but I found out, to my dismay, that it degraded into ham-handed Days of Our Lives bullshit, so I've left it out for now, at least until I can smooth it out. It was bad enough that even though Yi Lin smiles in most of these, she came off as embittered and jaded, and that just wasn't Yi Lin, no matter how many screwed up marriages or anything would have come her way.

So, take all this with a grain of salt, or don't take it at all. Action-figures, after all.

One last little tidbit, though: this mini-comic.

As an aside, I was basing Yi Lin's dress off this Tibetan woman's dress: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/102_0817.jpg and her instrument in the last panel is a Dranyen/Dramyin, a Himalayan seven-string lute that you could find in Tibet, Sikkim and Himalayan West Bengal.

Thoroughly awesomesauce, Sharkman! It's nice to have some active content on this board that isn't griping about Zutarans. A double-moebius reach-around into Legend of Korra AU territory makes this sound very interesting, and Elizabeth Taylor'd-future-Yi-Lin looks like a fun concept to explore.

Now I'm interested in how a 50-year timejump affects the rest of the Jr Gaang, though I don't suppose many of them will end up in Republic City.

EDIT: Mulling over further Yi Lin/Korra interactions got me thinking about their dynamic, and I actually believe it slots together surprisingly well. I've speculated before that Tenzin will turn out to be a hedonistic, feckless old man to play off against Korra's bossy-parent Avatar persona, but Yi Lin adds a level of Sunset Boulevard-esque snarkiness that makes the whole relationship feel immensely funny:

I have to say I'm with Shark. I love the mood of the picture and really like the girls' distinct and unique figures, but Yi Lin's underoos make the scene look less like "gaang jr." and more like "Drawn Together". Even knowing the backstory behind her outfit, it just doesn't feel right.

Wait, would they really? I mean, it's not like monarchs marrying people from other countries was rare, even in the 16th century Europe, but I don't know much about monarchies in China. At the same time, it's 25 or so years later at bare minimum in Gaang Jr. and it's a little bit longer yet by the time Irah would be married. Also, we don't really have a full concept of what the Fire Nation's political system. I mean, two former enemies that were aided by the "current" monarch. The only politician we see is Mai's father, and as far as we can tell, she wasn't arraigned to marry Zuko like Ursa was to Ozai.

If you want drama, Dai Li and I have talked about how Irah may have decided to go on this whole trip to be with Hayoda under the pretense that she can't be with him because of what she thinks her position entails, but doesn't consider the work she could do to fix these issues since it works as a convenient excuse to avoid the commitment.

Maybe it's because I had been wracking myself with drama ideas for the whole "Yi Lin having a child and straining her relationship with Nikiru" thing, but can't something be free of drama just once? I mean, she's Irah, Princess of the Fire Naiton/Fire Lord, who the hell actually has the right to tell her what to do?

If we go down this road, what if she never lets her husband touch her and all of her kids are Hayoda's illegitimate progeny? That would be a scandal.

I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's some sort of femenist bent or something, but Irah relenting and letting some dude knock her up for the reasons of politics and hegemony feels...Like she's lost in the long run. Like if a member of the Gaang came back in Korra and died in the same episode via a crossbow bolt to the back after only one line. It feels like a total disservice. It feels...

Anon is right in saying there would be an issue, but I don't think it's an isue that can't be overcome.

Personally, I think Irah's opinion on the matter of marriage regarding royalty will prove the biggest hindrance, taking into account both legitimate concerns and personal fears. Nothing a pep talk or two wouldn't cure though.

I think she is indeed the new Kazuma, anon. I think so, indeed.

So, a little thought I had today while walking between classes, regarding language. In the show, everyone can understand each other perfectly regardless of nation, and I guess the smaller size of the Avatar world helps in that. But I couldn't help but think up some headcanon that there are some minor dialectical differences here and there. Maybe occupied Earth Kingdom territories picked up some Fire Nation loanwords in the War, and considering the great isolation the Water Tribes had with the rest of the world, their language had diverged a bit during the hundred years of the conflict.

Anyway, the only thing this has to do with the GJr is that I'd imagine most of the kids, having either Sokka or Katara as a parent, would have picked up some of these Water Tribe quirks, but Irah -- Fire Nation through and through -- would occasionally get tripped up by some idiom or figure of speech the other kids used and they'd have to explain it to her. Just another way of showing a perceived isolation from the rest of the "family" in the early days of the adventure.

Also other non-GJr headcanons: I like to think that writing in the Avatar world originated in the Fire Nation, when the four nations were one, and according to legends, when Dragons died naturally, their bones contained markings on their surfaces that taught writing to humankind, as a sort of homage to the oracle bones or "dragon bones" that are the earliest known sources of Chinese writing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_bone

I once was thinking about this very thing when I was contemplating the written language in the context of the failures of the movie.

I figure that our world has eventual changes due to geographical separation and the like, but the Avatar-verse has something we don't: The Avatar.

Think about it. This is a world where international dialogue is a Divine Imperative. It can't go a single generation without the Avatar without special exception, so I don't think there's enough separation between the nations to allow for different languages to arise. The idea of Dragon Bones and the Northern Water Tribe forbidding women from writing is a very clever idea.

Still, that doesn't stop me from wanting to somehow include Inuktitut as a type of "old" language that still saw use in some communities of the Southern Water Tribe before the War (something I wanted to incorporate into my comic, somehow.)

Maybe all the old languages from before this standardized one are from pre-war or even pre-Avatar cultures, who knows?

Yes, there were even linguistic differences in the Avatar world. Hell, the Swamp Tribe had accents.

I'm thinking of it like this: It's like in China. One language of communication, but many different local dialects. Even if one tribe speaks a language completely unintelligible to others, when they're on official business they speak the lingua franca. This, of course, implies that there's a consistent education system across all nations. I would expect the SWT to have been largely illiterate at its nadir.

Right so here is literally the first picture I've done of the twins.
The boy is Tenzin (dohoho), who's an Airbender, and Kayi, who is a Waterbender. They're about 9 here.

I'll try to fill in what vague details I can remember, as this was back in, oh lordy, October? Maybe November?

In my happy future, there is only Yikiru.

Soooo, let's see. Kayi's design was originally me trying to imagine Yi Lin's kid in Sharky's little future snippet, but then I just turned her into a sister instead. And then I decided she needed a twin, and that it'd be Tenzin, so I can still feel like I'm connected to actual Avatar canon, ahahaha.... ha...

Yue totally goes to the Ba Sing Se university, and is staying with Jing. Jing and Tseng have broken up because Jing refuses to commit to marriage.

Regardless, that changes nothing.

Here's a nice shot of the twins, I just threw down some shitty colouring to get a feel for it. I hate the colours though, I really need to redesign them.

Um yeah so Tenzin... I think the idea we decided on that he's not as hyper as Aang was as a kid, but is rather dedicated to airbending, so he trains all the time. He's a bit of a smart-aleck and his sense of humour isn't corny and terrible like his parents, it's more... off-key. The words 'an airbending, young Norm McDonald if you will' were thrown about. He also looooves animals, but unfortunately they can't stand him. Kung-fu Action Jesus he is not.

Kayi on the other hand... we decided to take her in the opposite direction. Avatar as a whole has so many Action-Girls that we just took a step back and said she's gonna be a spoiled pretty pretty princess. She doesn't focus on fighting with her bending, but rather is an ace healer. And unlike Katara, she's perfectly okay with that. She rather play support role to Tenzin's frontman. Also she's kinda a brat :p

She is visibly flustered as she stares down at a blank scroll pinned down to the table, tightly gripping her calligraphy brush and nervously tapping its butt end upon the table.)

YUE: (inaudible grumbling)

(YUE taps some more, then pauses, dips her brush in the inkwell. She is about to apply brush to paper, but stops suddenly. She pauses again, brush hovering over the scroll.)

YUE: (annoyed) UGH. Stupid poets’ block!

(YUE resumes her nervous tap-tap-tapping. Specks of ink drizzle on the back of her hand. She removes her glasses, flippantly tossing them on the table. She pinches the bridge of her nose.)

YUE: (muttering) This will be the last time I accept academic advice from Uncle. I’m a friggin’ botanist, not a poet.

JING: (offstage) Hey, Yue?

YUE: Yes?

JING: Are ya done yet? (arrives stage right) C’mon, let’s hit the bathhouse and clean our sweaty hides. (fans self) What a sweltering day. Screw this early summer nonsense.

YUE: Not yet, Jing. I’ve been trying to do this poetry assignment all afternoon and I’ve made almost no headway. - And why are you so eager to drag me off to the bathhouse anyway?

JING: How quickly you forget, my little protege. You must be properly groomed to attract those cute Ba Sing Se University boys.

YUE: How many times must I tell you that I’m not staying here so I can pick up guys. I’m dedicated to my studies first and foremost.

JING: Or so you think.

YUE: Pah to you! (sticks out tongue) Regardless, unless you know how to describe the splendor of a stigma or how inspirational the function of megasporangia can be, I’m not going anywhere. Baths or not.

JING: Megasplogorg-a-what?

YUE: Exactly.

(offstage) UNKNOWN: That’s it Kayi, just like that. Take your time, focus on keeping the globule steady.

KAYI: Got it, big bro! I think...

(TSENG and KAYI emerge from stage right. TSENG is wiping his hands free of flower on his cooking apron. KAYI is concentrating on waterbending a melon-sized water globule as it orbits around her waist. It’s part hula-hoop and part juggling act, but all balance and focus.)

TSENG: Fruit Pies should be coming along nicely. Though I think I felt the floor shake a little while I was in the kitchen. Let me guess...Yue’s getting frustrated.

YUE: (raises hand) Busted. I suck at poetry.

KAYI: Haw haw!

TSENG: Kayi hush. Less talking, more bending.

(KAYI pouts, she hastens her motions, speeding the globule of liquid around her a little faster. TSENG moves to YUE’s side.)

TSENG: Anything I can help you with? What’s your poem about? What do you have so far?

YUE: ...

TSENG: (reading off of YUE’s scroll) “To me, flowers can be...” and that’s it? Seriously, Yue?

(YUE headdesks on the table, TSENG whacks her in the shoulder with his apron. The scene shifts focus on JING and KAYI as YUE and TSENG banter in a rather animated manner in the background, silent to the audience)

(JING sits in half-lotus against the wall, she snaps her fancy looking fan open and starts wafting her face. She turns to Kayi)

JING: Heh, just look at em go.

KAYI: (turning to JING, still bending) Heehee, yeah. I’ve seen this a lot when I was little. When Yue and my brother started at each other I called it a ‘happy fight’. They usually start out all frowns but wind up smiling and giggling with each other when its over. Much better than the Yi Lin and Tseng fights. I always end up healing both of their dummy-heads when its over. I get so much practice easing headaches that way!

(sudden shift to the other conversation, YUE is making furious headway in her assignment)

TSENG: ...that’s when you have to BS things. Use something like “The stamen is glorious and powerful like the Outer Wall!” or something...

YUE: (furiously brushing) Why didn’t I think of...oh wow, keep it coming.

(shift back to KAYI and JING.)

(KAYI gets a bit more confident in her bending, the globule makes a loop-de-loop above her head before it resumes its orbit)

JING: Oooh. Getting a little fancy there, ‘ey munchkin?

KAYI: Well, I *do* have an awesome teacher. Wanna see something else? He started teaching me this last week, but I think I have the hang of it.

JING: (crosses her arms atop her knees, grinning) Go ahead.

KAYI: Ok, watch this! I’m gonna make a ring of ice!

(in the background, YUE and TSENG are pounding fists, having completed YUE’s poem assignment)

KAYI: Hup!

(The water globule flattens into a tube around KAYI’s waist, she begins to freeze the hoop of water. Or so she thinks.)

*PLOOSH*

(An error in her technique results in a sloppy splash of water sent airborn behind her, all over TSENG, YUE, and YUE’s poem. The poem, its ink nowhere near dry, is ruined. YUE takes one look at the ruined parchment. YUE is bereft. She stands up and flings her brush out of the window.)

YUE: Yep. I’m done for today. Fuc-...erm. Enough of this. Jing let’s hit the bathhouse before I lose my head. (stomps out of room, stage right)

JING: Awesome! Pack my towel for my would ya?

TSENG: (NOT PLEASED) Kaaaayiiiiii!

KAYI: Eeep!

TSENG: (grabs KAYI by her earlobe) Waterbending. Drills. Outside. Now.

*SMACK* (as JING smacks TSENG’s hand away from his kid sister)

TSENG: Ow!

JING: Waterbending drills my arse. She’s coming with us to the baths. It’s my fault for egging on the poor girl anyway. We’ll offer our apologies to Yue after she winds down a bit.

TSENG: (frowns) And what about me?

JING: Take care of your fruit pies, silly! Or try to rewrite what you and Yue had in the meantime.

(JING ushers KAYI offscene and pauses)

JING: Ya know, if you wanna join us...I think I have your “Sen” getup stashed away somewhere...

TSENG: I’m content with my fruit pies for now, thank you very much.

JING: Whatever suits you, hon. See you later!

(JING exits stage right, the scene darkens. After a long pause, TSENG sits at the table and attempts to recreate what he and YUE worked on. Suddenly, a mist of block smoke oozes in from stage right.)

Well one of the issues I ah...I admit I left in just to show off a bit of skin. My bad there.

And yeah, the main theme seemed to get across, but what I'm more interested in at this point is how many side-questions and little notes came across; Mari mentioned to me something about Toph having slightly red-eyes in 1-6, and that he thought it indicated that perhaps Toph had been a little more upset over his current condition than she was letting on. That's a nice kinda thing to pick up on, and the kind of thing that generates questions like what she was doing, and why it'd affect her like that, or how he got those injuries, etc. So I guess I'd just like to knock some more ideas around off of it, rather than just let it sit there so people can say it's either good or bad.


And regarding Iroh...I think he would support it, after a fashion, but he wouldn't push for it. He's no asshole who doesn't believe in redemption, certainly, but he just seems less interested in her...possibly through the very human stint of not really getting on with her or knowing her very well- she was with his bro, and he likely didn't spare much thought for her; if he did, he would've known that giving her a prezzie like a doll wasn't exactly her thing.

No special reason for drawing this...I just felt like it, after talking with Mari aaaages ago about things around this. I guess it finally gestated into an image.

It occured to me that I've been doing art for this project based on my old Yi Lin ideas for the longest time and never shared them here, despite what good that might do. Well, no more! I'mma batch upload what I can for the night, starting first with the more recent doodle:

This here was an idea I jotted down in my mini-sketchbook. You all remember the idea I had that when Yi Lin earns her arrows, she decides to go on a sort of pilgrimage, right?

...right? Oh come on, it was only a few months...

Anyway, I had the notion that one of the places she visits are the mountain ranges that once were home to nomadic Airbender families, the ones who didn't spend all their time in the temple, so she suits up in traditional Air Nomad garb (which I was lifting heavily from Tibet and the robes of the monks and nuns in the show) mounts up on an Iguana Yakram and forges through.

I also had the idea that when she earned her arrows, she wasn't aware that nuns only shaved their forehead and showed up to the session bald as her dad. Figuring she might as well take on the extra pain in the name of equality and have the whole thing. She doesn't stop for a haircut during her travels, and this is kind of in the early years before she ends up with a kid and an ex-husband, so it's still short.

This is still in progress, I'll be adding more later.

Speaking of showing up years later with a kid and an ex, this was a doodle I actually inked of a possible appearance for her surprise appearance in the North Pole (get it? Appearance? Surpr-never mind.)

Borrowed heavily from Tibetan clothing styles again, in particular her vest, boots, and that "apron" like thing so many traditional outfits seem to have. Also appearing is her first eyepatch of many, shortly after the accident I spoke of back in >>87613.

Speaking of the kid, I can't leave her design-less, floating about in my head like some sort of Schrodinger's Airbender. This was an early sketch of Lin Lin, as I've come to dub her. The main thing behind her is that I basically designed her as a Tseng 2.0, only somehow grouchier. She's a prodigy-level Airbender, beautiful and somewhat exotic looking, thanks to her "four-nations parentage" smart, and a quick learner. Had she been born to a noble in Ba Sing Se, she probably would have ended up a gem of society...leave it to destiny to have her be spawned of the loins of our resident goof-nugget Yi Lin. Couple in all her glowing "positives" with the fact that she's rude, blunt, easily bored, and owing to her Airbender heritage, would much rather not deal with problems. If Aang's issue was running away or dodging an issue, hers is to ignore it or procrastinate until it hopefully goes away or goes off to bother somebody else. If Yi Lin being born to the world meant there was a surplus of sourness in the world, it seems The Spirits decided to load it off on her. Still, she's an honest girl and loves her mom fine enough.

This was actually just the joke of a one-shot joke that she shows up having never had a haircut in all her life, so it just grew to eventually be longer. I had drawn her with more Airbender-y garb here, but I picture her more in Earth Kingdom traveling clothes more often. Kinda like what Hope's family had, or maybe something closer to an average Ba Sing Se citizen.

You know, this is kinda odd, but I always felt slightly guilty for creating Lin Lin and Yi Lin's trials and tribulations against marriage, mostly because of how ingrained Yikiru (Yi Lin and Nikiru, for the uninitiated) was for some of us. I know the phrase "original character, plz steal" and the "action figure" analogy still apply, even in this third year of the Gaang Jr. project, now in a dormant twilight year. It's my deal if I decide to make her straight, or have Nikiru just be one of a small group of lovers during Yi Lin's life, even if they get back together later or something.

Just a phobia of mine. Like if I shipped Ty Lee or Azula with anyone other than each other, some part of me still feels like I'm stepping one someone's fun or somehow doing something "wrong" by mussing about with characters that some people saw as lesbians by stomping along and introducing a marriage just so I can see what one of them is like as a mother and give her a comedic foil of all things. Maybe it's just in my head.

Well, I can't well have all this Yi Lin stuff without going over my old ideas for Yi Lin as Korra's idiosyncratic Airbending master in the nutzo AU I came up with during the time since Korra's announcement!

This was the start of a comic I began way at the start of the Summer or so. This was a thing I started long before the reveal of Tenzin's appearance, Naga, Mako & Bolin, The Equalists and Amon, or any specific details of how Republic City (now The United Republic) was going to look and actually be like.

Hell, I had to redraw whole portions of this sucker on a separate piece of paper to get Korra right after they finally revealed her face! That's how long I've had this one on the backburner.

(I ended up losing a bet to Dai Li that he could finish his Tom-Tom comic, earlier in the thread here: >>91506. I've yet to finish his fanart request, too.)

As such, regarding this one, I've decided to try and finish it according to my original ideas, just to keep it all nice and creatively solid and full of the integrity of my original path...that and I didn't wanna redraw it and rethink it to shoehorn in all the new reveals.

I really miss these characters, and I especially had fun dabbling with Aang's formerly theoretically possible, now firmly AU-Universe, first born daughter. I figure that Tenzin is going to be a moral center for Korra, trying to reign her in and acting as the more serious and duty-driven member of her circle. Yi Lin turns that completely on its head, turning Korra from the reckless firebrand I picture her to be and making her the straightman (so to speak) of the relationship in trying to learn Airbending while also dealing with a professional oddball.

I try to think that if Tenzin is like the uncle who tries to teach you wrong from right, and of the virtue of hard work, Yi Lin would be like the aunt who bought you your first six-pack when you were 16.

Yeah, it's the same dress I snagged a photo of (seen here: >>87614) way back when I first designed the 67-year-old Yi Lin's outfit, turns out it was there in the Tibet exhibit and I had no clue I'd run into it. Got some new angles of it and was able to re-shape my mental picture of her outfit accordingly.

So good to see the kids still adventuring. :)

So was there ever an adversary from a former conquered people of the Fire Nation? For some reason I recently got a craving for a sad story about some fighters that just go about raiding people because even if their young are now free "they swore fealty to Fire Lord Ozai".

I think the closest we ever came was Dai Li's story "The Graveyard" detailing the Gaang Jr.'s encounter with the soldiers left behind in the Earth Kingdom after Sokka dumped them in the ocean during the finale some 20+ years prior, but I don't think we ever had kids going up against actual militants.

Not militants, people looking for death because they can't live with what they did during the occupation. That any resistance they had and latter sacrificed to survive wasn't as effective as a couple of kids. Sailing around in dilapidated fire nation warship and degrading armor conducting small raids in the hope that someone would put them out of their misery.
